    Will retail users be able to freely upgrade to a win10 retail license?

    I wonder if reserving a free copy means it's going to pre-load the files before the official launch date, if not it seems a bit odd to reserve a free copy for what is probably going to be a free-for-all download scramble.

    Any news on cost for new copies, as in not upgrading?

    Microsoft hasn't made it clear how the upgrade process will work for retail licences: they talk about the lifetime of the device rather than the licence, meaning that it's quite likely you'll be able to upgrade your Windows 7 or 8.1 retail licence to Windows 10 for free so long as you do so during the year grace period. If you do it outside that period - by building a new PC and transferring your Windows 7/8.1 retail licence, for example - then I'd guess you'd need to pay for an upgrade. Just guessing, mind: like I say, Microsoft hasn't made that particular scenario clear.
    Nup, but expect it to be roughly in-line with Windows 8. I'd also be surprised to see the sub-£25 limited-time-offer deal repeated: the freebie is instead, rather than as well. That said, it's not impossible that after the free year is up they'd offer a discounted £25-ish licence for people who missed it for a further six months or so - but it certainly ain't guaranteed.

    EDIT: Just spotted that NewEgg has listings up for Windows 10 Home and Pro OEM licences: $110 and $150 respectively.

    No cheap upgrade for my Mini ITX pc's then, grr, they are running windows 10 preview at the moment.

    Pretty sure in the reg process it mentioned a 3gb download that you could install at a later date so I'd imagine it doesn't have to be an upgrade and you can do a full install.

    If you're able to do a full install from scratch, doesn't that negate the whole idea? I mean you could have an old XP install, flatten that and install from a disc to Win 10... If what I've read is right, it sounds as though they're making the upgrades on available to Win7/8 --> Win10, so it'd need to detect a previous install of those to be able to make the upgrade.

    This would be ideal.

    But this will be the way it works.

    I have never actually gone the upgrade path myself, always preferring a fresh install.


    Thing is if you do, do the upgrade and have to reinstall, how does that work?

    Would I be right in assuming you have a licence code and use it as normal.?

    Just curious as I have never had to do it.

    A Microsoft engineer has replied to a similar question on the MS forums.

    So it looks like you need to go from 7/8.x to 10.

    Shame they don't offer an upgrade path for the Still-using-XP lot.

    Anyone have an unused win7 liscense left over? :D

    Hm. I don't seem to have this 'reserve your copy' thing now. Completely up to date, too. Wonder if it doesn't apply to boxed copies of 7 Ultimate...

    That was the same official line with the Windows 8 'upgrade'... you could do a fresh install but it would not activate with the old key, but there was a reg tweak to trick it to activate in that circumstance ;)

    Hopefully Win 10 will be the same as I'm due a clean install soon.

    Hmmm, if I understood it right, Win10 would no longer need a "Recovery Partition" and should remove this in the installation process.
    Is this confirmed anywhere?

    If you have to reinstall windows 10 starting with whatever base OS you upgrade from (7, 8, 8.1), what happens when that base OS (and its updates) are no longer supported, as XP is now? Do you loose your copy of Win10 if you have to reformat?

    Also, what happens when they release the next major revision of Windows? Will you have to skip 10, or will your install path get longer and longer?
