My current 7850 has been resident for approx 2 years and been ok for casual gaming, but a recent download of Arkham Knight has seen it struggle even reducing the resolution and with everything else either turned off or on low. There a few other newish games out there i'd liek to play too, so it looks like it's GPU upgrade time....

    The system is a 4670 @ 4.2 with 8gb ram, a good seasonic PSU and a couple of SSD's

What to go for? I've been looking at GTX 970's (EVGA SSC) or an R9 390. Is the stretch to a 980 or even 980ti worth the extra 250?? Is it even worth it with the rest of my rig? Any recommendations, comments etc welcomed! :thumb:

    1080p gaming? 970 wouldn't be a bad shout.

If the upgrade itch has been triggered on the sole basis of Arkham Knight then don't fear! The game was a shambles on release and will take a few months to optimise.

People say that, however I ran it on two systems I built, 4690k and 970 in both systems and it ran fine.

At least 4 Titan Xs.

970 sounds about right. Smashing 1080p with that card.

    970.
OR get second hand card, like my gtx 780 I'm selling which is factory overclocked and basically as fast as 970 or Titan.

Another vote for the 970. Cracking card for 1080P. :)

I think a 980 or two are in the process of being sold in the Marketplace. Have a look!

960 for 1080p would also be a lower cost decent option.

R9 390 or GTX970 seems the most logical choice.

Either would provide decent performance and without looking at a frame rate counter would be indistinguishable from eachother whilst gaming (ignoring outliers).

I would possibly sway towards the 390 for nothing more than it giving you more VRAM at the same price point.

Thanks for all the advice - seems that 970 is the popular choice, but that I cant go wrong if stay with AMD.

Best start reading the various reviews etc...

That's certainly interesting - didn't realise that - and on closer inspection seems like I've got a 7870 rather than the 7850 - not that I expect it makes a huge difference.
