    Hi Guys,

Have a weird solution which I think I know the answer to but would like to doublecheck.

Problem: My Desktop always get 100mbps network connection from patch cable (run is about 30/40m)

    Tested:
    1. Put cable into my laptop it gets 1Gbps
    2. Tried other cables in the run, same issue
    3. Put an 8 port switch, gives me gigabit
    4. Tried a pcie Intel network adapter from my server, still 100mbps

My thoughts are the mobo just isnt supplying enough power for the run, any other thoughts?

    DT

Wired connection speed isn't a function of power. Have you tried manually configuring it to 1Gb/full duplex - might not be auto-negotiating correctly.

It might just be the network cards you are using. What's your motherboard?

How about trying a Linux live CD see what speeds you are getting, to rule out the OS as a factor.

Did you turn the PCH Lan Controller in the BIOS

Linux live disk is also 100mbps.

    PCH is enabled :)

also have tried other ports on the main switch and no go.

Sorry, I went full eejit on my last edit. I should have said did you disable PCH LAN in the bios when you installed the PCI-e card. That seems to be advice in the manual.

It looks like its a hardware issue then. Have you tried updating the BIOS?

Whats on the other end of the 40m cable? Have you tried taking your pc over there and plugging it in directly with a shorter cable? Or bring the unit to the PC if its too much hassle the other way round.

not really possible, the switch is wired into a cupboard downstairs and the pc is upstairs

I could wire the smaller switch downstairs and see if that gives me gigabit upstairs? what do you think?

Yes doing that will remove the cable as a source of the problem

can you get a gigabit switch upstairs and see if that gets gigabit, and wire into that from pc to see if that fixes it

I can, and it does work but just seeing if i can fix/find the route issue

Tried the small 8 port downstairs and it stays on 100 mbps, so I may have to plug it in upstairs after all :/

I dunno its bizarre. Your getting gig on a short run on your 8 ports, but on a long run you are dropping back to 100meg. If that was the only thing I would say its the cable. But your other devices can get gigabit on the same cable run, which means its not the cable.

The only thing I can think of is that there are some short comings or noise in the cabling that some cards are more tolerant to than others.

I know, ah well I have left it on the mini switch. Was more of a nice to know, my expectation is very similar to yours as to why it isn’t working

Thanks for trying though mate :)

I've had something similar with a customers wiring, I ended up putting a switch between router and cable to sort the problem, it seems to be a signal strength issue

Can you run a temporary cable from pc to the patch to see what happens?

What is the model number of the switches you are using? If they are smart is the firmware up to date? Is there something other than the laptop you can test with?

Test the cables with a cheap cable tester to know for sure.

already have, always test all my cables (yeah I'm that guy)

Tried multiple different patch cables with no change,

updating the firmware now, will see what happens

Tested with 2x laptops so pretty confident (both have gigabit nics)

The switch is Web managed, did you check the Web gui to see if the port I question is in anyway throttled?
