    Not the most inspired of names no, but then VR is an entirely new concept for a lot of people, so it'll seem original to the mainstream. It also avoids confusion about what it is, Oculus Rift and Vive could be just about any product, whereas Playstation VR is very clear in its intent.

    Funnily enough, that was half of my reasoning for thinking that HD-DVD win out over Blu-ray in the format war (the other half being, when has Sony ever won a format war?) You upgraded your TV to an HDTV, so it made sense to upgrade your DVD player to an HD-DVD player to match. Blu-ray, by contrast, sounds like alien porno.

    History, of course, shows that I called that one wrong. I've still got two HD-DVD add-ons for the Xbox 360, too - thankfully purchased when they were about £20 with a bundled fistful of films, not at the launch price!

    The 3.5" FDD, and arguably the CD and DVD (which, like the BD, were developed by a group of companies including Sony).

    To which I counter Betamax, MiniDisc, MultiMedia Compact Disc, Memory Stick, Universal Media Disc, arguably Super Audio CD... Also, Sony developed an unsuccessful precursor to the 3.5" diskette, launched with the SMC 70 and featured on Sony MSX machines plus the HP-150; the format was dead in a year, and although the Microfloppy Industry Committee used Sony's original design as a starting point the two were incompatible.

    I'll give you CD (with Philips) and DVD (with Philips, Toshiba, and Panasonic), though.

    I have a HD-DVD/Blu-ray combo drive as well though :)

    I guess it shows familiar names only go so far.

    True story: Beta may not have won the format war, but Sony still got paid. Every VHS deck sold for several years included a royalty payment to Sony because JVC used Sony's patents in the design of VHS.

    And the 3" QuickDisks are adorable.
