I'm toying with the idea of a full system upgrade in the next couple of months, and as it's Friday afternoon I thought I'd do a little bit of window shopping. I was checking prices for the i5 6600K and i7 6700K and I have to say that I'm absolutely staggered at how expensive they've become - the 6600K is currently about £225 and the 6700K is around £360! That's absolutely bonkers, especially as the 6600K launched at about £195 and has gone up by about 15% since lauch! What's worse is that a lot of retailers don't even have stock available at the moment.

Is this just a case of supply being limited so the prices are being forced up, or is there something else going on? It just seems crazy that prices have spiked to such a degree since launch. I have to say that it makes Skylake look rather unattractive - I could get a 4690K for £170, rather than pay 30% more for the 6600K.

Apparently Intel deliberately made them in small numbers. Maybe because they thought that it would put prices up, maybe because they want to shift other stock.

I would avoid Skylake completely and rock with X99 and a 5820k. At least the option is there in the future to upgrade to a 5960x.

You have to realise that AMD are basically dead in the CPU sector now. This gives Intel free reign to charge whatever they feel is right. There's absolutely nothing and no one to drive down their prices.

They may be testing the water to see what they can get away with too.

Always makes me laugh when people smite AMD and say they can't wait to see the back of them. If this is what Intel do then I shudder to think what Nvidia would do.

Those are crazy prices! Can only be short term though, surely.

A +1 on the X99 setup, got a 5820k for £270 in September due to skylake launch prices keeping x99 prices down :D

I avoided Skylake due to the premium prices. Went Haswell which is going to be basically as good in real world applications.

Well that explains the pricehike, doesn't it.

That said, I'm waiting for the second part of the Skylake review here, the 6600K. (as promised in the first one)

The price performance sweetspot so far has been the 4690K, the 6600K should be replacing that.
X99 and a 5820k is simply in a different league pricewise

Xir, what would you like to see? I've got four 6600Ks headed my way (yes, they'll also be up for sale shortly!) but I can run a few tests for you if you'd like. 6600K vs. 6700K?

so...would I recommend the X99-5820K option to someone asking about the 6600K?

    Lets compare:
we have the old era i5-4690K and i7-4790K (Haswell)
the new era i5-6600K and i7-6700K (Skylake)
    and the X99-i7-5820K

(German pricing today, I've tried to calculate with comparable boards))

    i5-6600K - Asus Z170 pro gaming ~420€
    i5-4690K - Asus Z97 pro gamer ~350€

    One league higher:
    i7-6700K - Asus Z170 pro gaming ~520€
    i7-4790K - Asus Z170 pro gaming ~460€

    top League:
    i7-5820k - Asus X99 Pro ~700€

The real surprise is that i5-6600K approaching i7-4790K pricing :D

If people are dumb enough to buy Skylake at those prices, Intel will keep charging those prices.

    Vote with your wallet.

The problem is that the stock is limited. Intel can charge whatever they like as the competition is lacking ... :(

I can't help you there, Xir. I've not got a 4**0K to hand any longer. Sorry!

Can't see a any point moving from 4690K to 6600K, especially if it's for gaming.

There's barely any point in even going from Sandybridge to Skylake, if it's just for gaming.

Well the question was, if upgrading from anything lower, or buying new, do you go for a 4690K of for a 6600k based system?

    i5-6600K - Asus Z170 pro gaming -16GB DDR4 ~520€
    i5-4690K - Asus Z97 pro gamer - 16GB DDR3 ~430€

That's a nice saving to invest in your graphicscard or ~250GB of SSD for instance

Yes, this is this question! I'm not thinking about upgrading from Haswell to Skylake, but rather I'm planning to upgrade from an E8500 s775 system, so either a 4690K or a 6600K would be a massive, massive upgrade for me :) As you say, the Haswell-based system is going to be considerably cheaper (the 4690K comes in at about £65 less than the 6600K).

I'm probably going to put off my upgrade until the new year and see if Skylake prices stabilise. If they don't, then I'll probably go Haswell, but I'd really prefer a Z170 motherboard as I'm intending to go mITX and I'd really like to have a bit more future-proofing in terms of USB 3.1, M.2 and so on, which aren't necessarily available on Z97 mITX boards.

Bawjaws, keep an eye on the FS area. I have four 6600Ks in front of me that will be tested this weekend. They'll be up for a good price. ;)

I'm expecting them to go fast (or hoping so!), so be vigilant. :D
