Whilst it's a nice gesture it would still likely end up in the bin. Especially because the 8370 is unlocked and only performs well when you overclock it. And no matter how good the Wraith thing is it's inevitably going to just end up in the bin, like the old stock cooler.

Buying an FX8 and not clocking it to within an inch of its life is a crime..

No I think it has to come with the CPU in a special edition.

So, we're interested in a cooler that comes bundled with a processor that no one wants to buy...

Well they maybe wasted on the current AMD lineup but I'm assuming these will be the coolers that come with the new Zen CPU's later this year.

..and they look like they could be good enough to keep a high clocked Zen under control in a MiniITX build, so its interesting to have a look at them today.

Yeah, things like this cooler, CPU refreshes, motherboards appearing with newer features etc. are probably just ways of trying to keep AM3+ relevant. The latest tech will have been added by the motherboard manufacturers, rather than being a new feature of any new or refreshed chip. There does seem to have been a bit of a push from multiple motherboard manufacturers recently, suggesting some sort of incentive on AMD's part, but this is just idle speculation :)

Asus wouldn't launch a board without support , *cough* payment* cough* from AMD to do so.

makes me wonder though why the 970 chipset rather than the 990 one

Possibly because the 970 chipset is cheaper?

Probably a cost issue. I wouldn't be surprised if Asus is doing it because they don't really want to make a new motherboard design for a very very badly aging platform. Not to mention that the 38x PCI-E 2.0 Lanes is probably an extra cost when the 22 or so lanes from the 970. The question though is why not the 990x...

This. Unless you're talking about contra-revenue, no MB company gets paid directly to release hardware.

AMD markets (that are left) are extremely cost sensitive. It has no high-end. Which means 970. Could also be they discontinued the 990 and only now offer the 970.

I wouldn't be surprised if they discontinued the 990 to be honest. It doesn't make sense when they can easily just use a sort of weird quasi implementation of SLI/CFX that works with the PCI-E Lanes iirc.

Kinda sucks how things are though.
