Yeah that's the one. The price has rocketed though - I wonder if there might be cheaper options! I'm a fairly die-hard ASUS mobo fan, so I'd perhaps go for one of the other ASUS X99 boards.
I dont mind paying the money if im getting something good for it. I also love ASUS the current board with my OC has never once crashes other than achieving the OC. So im extremely happy. My main goal is to get great sound with the board as its a big priority of mine.
To be honest, I'd go for it. I've had fun OCing mine (it's now stock in my server and probably crying as its life is easy haha) The sound is also decent on the board, but I also run an external DAC
Yeah me too, but I won't take anything away from MSI because their software is absolutely brilliant. I know that 'soft clocking' is frowned upon but we are talking Afterburner for your CPU. Most of the complaints I see from people who are trying to choose between the 6700k and 5820k is that the boards are expensive. And they do have a point, some X99 boards are simply insane. But I have a mid range board and it does everything I could possibly want it to do, plus the easiest overclocking I've ever done. The MSI command center is simply a skinned version of that. You won't get scores like that out of a 6700k

I doubt you will get that stable at those speeds. As I said, from the reviews I read the 5820k really didn't like anything faster than the standard 2133 or whatever it is. Also (rather boringly, if you are into overclocking) I found that spending hours messing with the bus and so on was all a waste of time, because I could get higher clocks by simply adding multi and voltage (see video).I could be wrong in a sense there, because you could logically XMP the ram and then overclock with the multi which should leave the ram at its set XMP speed. But I could also be wrong there too, the memory controllers on the 5820k may simply not like those speeds and become unstable. The 5820k has a few features that have been cut out by Intel. Lots of lanes is one of them, so you are pretty much limited to two GPUs and a M2/PCIE SSD and that's about it. Well, unless you buy a board with a PLX? chip?. What I'm saying is that the 5820k is a cheap hex cored chip. Well, it's relatively cheap when you take everything into account (and the IMO over inflated price of the 6700k). It has lanes removed, doesn't like fast ram and etc. So there are a few caveats there. That's why if I were building a 5820k based rig from scratch I would no go mad on the ram and the board. It's kinda like putting perfume on a pig. 5820k = max £200 on a board and 16gb quad channel 2133 (unless you require more ram). Once you get to the 5930k that all changes, but then that's beside the point because the 5930k ain't 'cheap'. So yeah. As I say, the 5820k is almost too good to be true. Almost... I would still take one any day of the week over a 6700k. I can get 4.6ghz bench stable out of mine just shoving in multi and volts, and easily score over 1200 in Cinebench. Something I have only ever seen out of a 6700k under LN2 and running insane clock speeds.
From the BT review - Using this speed means you don't have to fiddle with straps and the like to be able to POST successfully using our test kit's 2,666MHz memory, as the Intel RC code limitation on X99 means running memory faster than 2,666MHz results in a change of BCLK from 100MHz to 125MHz. On most boards we've found, having to manually enter the frequency settings results in a slight increase in power consumption. Yeah see I think that's where the 5820k falls on its face. The memory controllers get awful flaky when you start to crank the FSB. IIRC you should really limit the ram to 2400.
