Thanks Gareth - It was worth checking, because that's the kind of stupid thing I'm more than capable of.

The number is correct though. It turns out that Microservers are covered by the HP Enterprise business instead of plain old HP but, rather than offer a seamless transition to the page you need, it basically blanks you until you happen across a page where it actually tells you to piss off to the other site.

Still no wiser as to why the cashback claim was refused. I'll have to wait for a reply.

 

I had a claim where they said they couldn't read it properly, and asked for a photo of the serial, and then they approved it.

 

I emailed the serial number to them again and they've approved it.

 

Has anyone had issues with windows update breaking the boot-SSD-in-ODD mod here?

A few months ago a windows update batch gave me issues that were only recoverable from a restore, and I've kinda just not been installing updates since then, not knowing which one was the one that broke things - not really a great long-term approach.

Now I've got 63 important and 46 recommended updates, and quite keen not to step through one by one if anyone has encountered similar. OS is 2012R2 in this case, but similar issues could apply to 8.1 as well I suppose.

HP have since doctored the pic on their website and removed the Microserver from it. Don't know why, but I'd be surprised if the appearance changed much. No word on spec yet, but the internals are supposedly vastly different from the Gen 8 (whatever that means).

As you say, interesting to know what they've put inside this time...

 

Unless some deal has been done to get Ryzen in it which I can't see, I reckon it'll be similar to before using Intel chips with a newer socket. I also can't see them stepping back to a BGA jaguar solution either.

 

They'll be using Xeons exclusively now. The Kaby Lake Celerons, Pentiums and i3's have all ditched ECC support if I remember rightly. I can't see there being any budget options but I hope I'm wrong.

 

They could still support KL Celerons, Pentiums and i3s without ECC memory. Didn't the N36/40/54 support non ECC memory? Just may take a bit more buyer beware approach that if your going to put one of these processors in this product you are big enough to know what memory to use.

Ah, I guess it was just the i3's that dropped it. Ignore me.

 

Today i found out, HP Microserver Gen8 has a REST interface to control it (if you have iLO firmware 2.0 or newer) :

For example, to power on the server through this interface all you need to do is to send a POST request to your server (to https://ilohostname/rest/v1/Systems/1 ), with basic authorization for your iLO username and password, set content-type to application/json and send a POST payload of :

Result ? Server powers on.

Just a small info for people like me, who didn't know this thing did exist.

AMD Opterons - didn't see that coming!

 

It is just me, or it looks like it is two separate HP microserver divisions working at HPE ? One does AMD based systems (Gen7, Gen 10) without iLO, the other one does Intel based ones (Gen8) with iLO.

AMD's website it says x3000 targeted workloads: Media Classroom & Gaming (besides usual file and print that most here would expect). It makes me wonder if the GPU is the selling point and I can see some uses for it in this form factor.

Looking at wikipedia the X2100 was Jaguar based. X3000 could be an evolution of that so atom performance. AMD version of Nvidia ion back in the day. I expect this to be very affordable and I'll guess around the N36/40/54 levels of performance depending on scenario

 

I seriously doubt that.

 

X3000 is still Jaguar based.

 

Bit of a mixed bag with the gen10, won't be able to turn it into a powerhouse while limited to the APU derived Opterons.

Biggest weak point of the Gen 8 was the Poxy B120i controller. Quite liked the rest of it.
