Graphics Pascal and Polaris Discussion Thread

Since the GTX 1060 is going to launch soon I have been looking through the pictures of its non reference boards. Nvidias reference board uses a 6 pin pcie cable while in contrast some custom boards are shown with 6pin, 8pin, and two 6pin power connectors. I dont recall seeing an upper mid-range gpu recently with this many power connector options. I can imagine a number of reasons for preferring two 6 pins over an 8 pin connector such as ease of board design, but is there any benefit to the users?

 

If a single 6-pin is sufficient to power the board, then anything above that provides the same benefit as heatspreaders for DIMMs: they do nothing except raise the price and add inconvenience from bulk, but the perception of bigger = more better persists.

 

Can help when overclocking, can also put less pressure on the pcie socket. If AMD had fitted the 480 with a 8pin none of the issues it's had would of happened.

Pretty much as expected then, almost 980 performance. There's a *** paper between it and the RX 480 now it all comes down to price. I've been hearing that the RX 480 Nitro SHOULD cost £209. Less than the stock model and apparently this was from Sapphire themselves. The only price we have seen so far is the gouged OCUK price but if they do go out at £209 then I fail to see how Nvidia are going to be able to match that. They won't want to sell it (the 1060) for £209 that's for sure and I doubt we will see a decent custom model available for anywhere near that price.

Ed. The vital piece of the puzzle is missing though, Doom Vulkan performance..

 

if it is on avg around 5-10% faster than 480 8GB then anything above £250 mark makes it a poor investment.

If however they price it around £230 then there is no reason to buy a 480 as currently i cant see a cheaper 8GB 480 than £225

 

I would expect the 480 to drop in price. However, also consider that with better cooling you can get an extra 100mhz out of the 480 which makes it a whole different proposition. You go from 970 to 980+ performance with it overclocked. Thing is you don't even need to do it yourself as Powercolor for example are releasing a lovely looking card called the Devil and it's clocked to 1366 out of the box.

Aside from the stupid 6 point star it looks really nice too.

 

The nitro price is pre vat and store sales price which is about 40% on top which is what the Nitro ocuk price is. Ocuk forums have that answer already.

480 will likely increase in price due to the poor £ more so for custom models which are seeing signicant increases.

480 is about 6fps quicker than a 970 in doom at 1080p using Vulkan ( game nexus has the comparisons) 970 has no scaling in the benchmark and is still only slightly behind.

Nvidia and AMD has set the 2 prices in $ unfortunately our £ will increase the amount we pay.

 

1060 none founders rrp $249 is £189 pre vat and store tax. We could easily see a 1-1 pricing between $ and £ for the 1060 and the 480 8gb due to current economy. VAT takes that to about £220 most stores want to make 10-15% which puts the minimum price close to £250 for a custom 1060. If the £ drops to its lowest estimates of $1.15 you could easily see both the 480 and 1060 at £300 each.

 

No apparently it will have a sale price of £209. The £ has been the strongest recently since 2009. It's still worth more than a dollar so don't let people con you into their way of thinking !

THE biggest gouger in the UK is OCUK. Why do you think Gibbo has owned several Porsches? why do you think they pay him ridiculous amounts of money per year just to place orders and then sell to people? because he's good at it.

Scan then see OCUK's price and base their prices on those. Both drop a few quid, then it settles.

All the while Ebuyer and Amazon are usually considerably cheaper and don't talk out of their asses when it comes to exchange rates. PRE VAT the 480 should cost $199 converted into pounds. We don't pay higher shipping prices than the USA, nor are our import charges that much more than bringing product in from China for any country.

£151+ VAT is around £180. That is what most retailers are selling them for. All apart from OCUK who did have some at that price then pulled all of the 4gb (probably so they could upgrade them to 8gb and use them at full 8gb price in builds) and now the price has suddenly shot up.

Edit. Ah, I see Sapphire could mean a sale price without any VAT like you say yeah. Either way if the 1060 is £259 (OCUKs new asking price for the Nitro) then they will have to drop prices to sell them any way.

 

I think we have to deal with the fact that prices may rise.

 

Then people simply won't buy dude. This isn't the E-peen end of the market.

Just seen a couple of UK reviews for the 1060. Then I went off to Nvidia to see what the actual price and actual date was. All it says is "Coming July" with no price.

So it seems Bindi could have this one, vapor launch.

Just seen Bit's review. £279 they're having a laugh.

Edit again. Strix to cost £330. PMSL what drugs are they on? you can buy a 1070 for not much more or one of the best RX480s for £80 less.

 

Hoping for some decent ITX options, either AMD / NVIDIA. Got that new ITX build begging to be done!

Furry muff that ain't bad at all. Let's see how long it stays at that price.

 

EVGA has the best matx options from the looks of it, tiny cards.

Then they will buy the 1050 or 470 vault. These 2 cards are been priced at basically 970 levels. Which was between £240 - £280. Was a better £ then though.

 

£239 is the non-reference starting price. As that Scan link shows, it can be done and you get a good card for that money that is definitely competitive with the 480. There is also an EVGA and Zotac at that price. The FE is a bit silly price though.

 

You know it's time to upgrade when your GPU falls off the comparison charts.

 

£239 is the bargain of the century. Nvidia will sell alot of cards at that price point.

 

Hmm, so my case was specifically designed with the Asus mini card ranges. The evga being the closest match size wise is 2mm bigger, no idea if it will fit. I think my 750 ti is the same size so looks like I'll have to get a mobo mounted and start testing.

 

have you seen the compact versions on overclockers from Inno and Zotac ?
