980ti or 1070 if "maxed out" really does mean "maxed out".

The answer to this is going to depend on your budget, surely?

Yeah, a 980Ti or 1070 is the way forward.

If the question is not relevent then what is the point of this thread? I would have thought someone with no buget restraints would surely just buy a GTX 1080.

    Currently running a GTX 1070 and using a 29"ultrawide.

The rest of the rig is pretty what you used to run. :D

Been very happy with it so far.

Just ran Doom to have a quick look at the fps while running the VEGA Processing Central level and with everything set to max, no dips below 60 (running v-sync).

When looking at the reviews for this against other cards I just looked at the 2560 x 1440 figures. I think this is why most reviews don't include the 2560 x 1080 as a lot of people will just go off this res and not too sure how popular the ultrawide monitors are.

I was severely tempted by the 980ti, especially with the price drops and the few that were going through the marketplace. Managed to get the OC Armour for £389 so wasn't that much more really than a new 980ti.

Would I have liked a 1080, of course I would but it just too expensive for me.

Id say its game dependent more than anything else.

For example Witcher 3 may struggle to get 60 fps with everything on max even on the 1070. Crysis 3 is another. GTA5 even on max will be sub 60 fps.

1080 is the only card that delivers your 60fps target in every game that gets benchmarked yes the resolution is slightly higher in those benches.

Use the 1440p benches and see how close to max they actually are.

My old rule of thumb used to be buy the best card at the time every time you can gain more than 2x performance. Means I upgraded about 1 every 2-3 years. Depending on the gpu advances at the time.

Yeah, I agree. There is always going to be a few popular games that struggle even with a close to top tier card. If the original poster wants to properly max out as many games as possible then really its a flagship GPU. But as others have suggested, the next step down from a flagship, that sort of 1070 range would do very well on a good majority of the game. So I think its a question of priorities. For the sake of having to turn down a few setting in a handful of games, I think the 1070 is probably a more sensible choice.

    A stock clock 1070 gets you pretty much exactly 60fps in Crysis 3 and Witcher 3 at 2560 x 1440, http://www.anandtech.com/show/10325/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-and-1070-founders-edition-review/24 and in GTA 5 58 fps at 4K http://techreport.com/review/30413/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070-graphics-card-reviewed/5

(of course those are avg fps numbers, not min)

I game @ 2560x1440 on a 27" Asus MG279Q ips monitor with a EVGA 1070 Cheesecake and it buttery smooth.

I use hair works and get 44fps constant at 2560x1440 with my card, everything on max if I remember correctly. Except aa, supersampling if it exists, and probably bloom and motion blur as I always disable those. Trick is to use CCC, or whatever it is now to turn down the tesselation settings to 8x if irc.

Edit: I don't disable aa, I normally drop to 2x if available... Or any applicable lower setting.

True max out every game like I said is only 1 card. Everything else will require a sacrifice, Either live with that sacrifice or buy the best card.

I brought a new monitor and at 2560x1440 with hairworks the 1080 does deliver the 60fps with every setting at max on witcher 3. ( Delivers between 60 - 120 actually on a gsync monitor.)

Most games these days have an aliasing mode that allows you to max out with AA and not get too much of a hit. Doom for example you lose about 4 FPS.

I guess you could be anal and say maxed out means using the hardest AA to run but to me they all do the same thing and it's nice to have the option to choose :)

Either way my Titan X is more than enough to max out any game I've ran on it so far with the lowest FPS I have seen being in the 40s.

I meant to say I even use hair works. Which is why I edited tesselation settings for the witcher 3.

But correct. I don't run 2 things by choice, and haven't noticed much benefit at higher aa levels.

    haha VRAMgate !!

Heaven and Valley do some odd things. They usually report clocks incorrectly too. Glad you are happy with the card though :)

Looks like it's certainly treating you well. I picked up the founders 1070 (MSI) on launch day for £399 from OCUK. I've not OC'd it yet (no need) but certainly will when the time calls for it. You're OC is great! What Valley bench score do you get using the preset 'Extreme HD' bench?
