About damn time. 2FA should be mandatory for any login that has access to payment information.

Let's face it, the fine for loss of personal information is barely even noticed by a big, multinational corporation.

Make it scalable, so big companies are hurt as much as small ones (where a quarter-mil fine will utterly destroy them)... say, 25% of pre-tax profits for that year. Enough to make them take it seriously.

But of course, that'll never happen, because the big corporations can pay lobbyists, support a politician for election, etc, while a small business can't do that.

    ...

Otherwise... 2FA. Great. Happy it's there, sad it's necessary. Oh well.

I really should not be surprised about anything with Sony by now, but I still am every now and then.... Welcome to 2012, Sony! :thumb:

there are no fines yet! Not in the EU anyway. GDPR which comes into effect in 2018 will have an impact though and fines can be upto 4% of Global Turnover. That is very very significant

That's not true: as the article states, ICO fined Sony £250,000 over the 2011 breach, as it is entitled to do under the Data Protection Act 1998.

ah cool looks like they managed it under that then but 250K is nothing for Sony with GDPR the fine would have been up to 292 million USD

Less that they "managed it," and more that that's literally what ICO *does*. As in, that's why ICO even exists.

and how totally ineffective it actually is in the grand scheme of things - they lack the powers and are massively understaffed - They need to pick and choose which to deal with. There have never been more breaches and many companies still dont bother with adequate protections. Just take a look at headlines in any given week - Moonpig, talk talk, Sage etc all breached and lost customer data.

The GDPR should be a far more effective tool that applies to ALL companies in the EU (yes it will still include us after we leave)
