VERY interesting, and certainly a LOT smarter to buy than the Titan. I'm very surprised they put the full 12GB on there - would've expected 8GB. Overclocking wise, I imagine it has more headroom, so will perform the same as an overclocked Titan. The price will be very interesting too (using the word 'interesting' a lot!) The cheapest 1080s seem to be ~£600, so I'd expect these to go for ~£800.

The thing is what is the practical difference between
ti = 10 TFLOPS 1080 = 9 TFLOPS


4k gaming is going to see £200 (if it is £800 over the 1080 £600).

I am no way upgrading from the 1080 to the 1080ti.

The step up from 980 to 980ti was a whole other new level but here we have a tenth the performance increase.

ideally the ti would be even more impressive than 1terraflop?

More like Nvidia had some GP102 that did not pass for the Titan X, Time to put out a card to fill the gap.

Yeah, I reckon titans are really just the Ti models that have had a very successful yield during production. Titans are so marked up they are too lucrative to pass up, and having titans means Ti models as well. So I think NVidia will follow this pattern of SKUs for the foreseeable future.

 

That's what everyone does with their chips. Waste not want not.

 

It would be a departure from Nvidia's past Titans though: We normally see a Titan first and then a Ti after with a less binned core (original Titan), or see a Ti first if it's going to be cut-down from a later Titan (as with the Titan X). Releasing a later slower card is rather odd, and would indicate that GP102 yields are not increasing as quickly as Nvidia would like, which itself would be surprising with the Quadro P6000 already using a fully unlocked die.


Then again it IS WCCFtech, whose tactic is that if you report ALL the rumours, there's a good chance you'll have reported the correct one and can congratulate yourself over it later.

Or nvidia wants to keep the Ti as far below the inevitable Titan X HBM2 edition as possible.

Still will happen sometime, There is a perfect slot in performance for it.

 

I hope bringing 1080Ti (and Vega) will drop prices of 1080 to £500 and make 1080Ti £600 card... £650 max.

But I take it as an insult - giving so high price for a card that is clearly not worth that money.

 

Not to you maybe, but all the people buying them seem to think it is worth the money (or else they would not be). as do Nvidia and all their OEMs. Sales indicate they are broadly correct, too.

 

If you think it's not worth it buy the competitor, Oops there isn't one. Lack of competition leads to high prices. Nvidia are 1 whole launch cycle ahead of AMD now. Assuming Vega launches latest date they will of had a 11 month sales lead for the 1080. If it's delayed it could be over a year.

Nvidia are milking a open goal. We shall see but AMD missing key Christmas period window for both its Zen CPU and Vega gpu enough expected is a very bad thing.
