The discovery of DD Sherman (Duplex Drive) amphibious tank off of Salerno, Italy brings to light a long forgotten incident of initial loss of what was considered a top secret weapon before D-Day in Normandy almost a year later.

It is also interesting how the story develops and keeps going to deal with the discovery.

I'm still looking for Salerno films. Although the video below is quite factual and informative, the speaker is difficult to enjoy.

Operation Avalanche - The Battle of Salerno (18:19)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O8b5mM6Zdc

Edit: This Salerno episode starts at the (5:35) minute mark of the first listed segment. Then, it continues with the next segment afterwards.

    (8/12)Battlefield I The Battle for Italy Episode 6 (GDH) (10:00) <Salerno last 4.5 minutes>
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_Rc9jvShgk

    (9/12)Battlefield I The Battle for Italy Episode 6 (GDH) (10:00) <Salerno for first 5 minutes>

Deceit was one of Hitler's most powerful weapons. Unknown to me until viewing this film was
the basis for Stalin's paranoia that prompted him to purge his military of over 40 generals, all of his corps commanders, and 293 division commanders in the years just before WW II. There are other secrets revealed, after the purge, in the film.

Mainly covering German and British secret intelligence operations
that focus on the inner German resistance against Hitler and how the allies shunned overtures from the German resistance after lured British agents were abducted on the Dutch border where their accompanying Dutch officer was shot - dead, this also covers Admiral Wilhelm Canaris' efforts to subvert Hitler.

    Secret intelligence
can decide where and when a decisive battle may be won or lost. Below are prime examples of having a decided advantage over potential and current enemies.

Edit: Battle 360 Episode 2 -"Vengeance at Midway" (54:30)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4dya7mMSLE

    Edit:
Due to the US aircraft carriers not being in port when Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese, the planned third strike that day was called off. The tertiary strike was to bomb the fuel reserves and the dry docks that were used for ship repair. Consequently, the dry docks were able to be used to repair all most all of the sunken or damaged battleships. More importantly, the dry dock was available for emergency repairs when the Yorktown came back damaged from the battle of the Coral Sea. Also, the fuel reserves were available for Yorktown to replenish making it possible to join the fleet at Point Luck off of Midway.

Explaining how the German Enigma machine
came to be copied and its code broken by a joint Polish - British assault, these efforts are said to have shortened WW II by at least two years.

Many historians hold that WW II was a continuation of WW I with a pause. True or not, one fact is certain and that is that is has been about 100 years, in September of 1916, that the first tank attack occurred. So much of what tanks came to be and how they were to be used was formed in the first world war.

I skipped through The Pacific episodes until I found which episode that this video clip came from. I was surprised at how many tanks pop up in the series.

Thanks for posting it as it had been awhile since seeing the series, and I'd forgotten just how many tanks there were.

In episode 4 of Band of Brothers, "Replacements", the story of the American efforts of Operation Market Garden leave out a considerable amount of the details surrounding the British paratroopers efforts to take the Arnhem bridge in Holland.

IMDB has it listed as the 10th episode, of the series "Narrow Escapes of WWII", this episode is named "The Real Bridge Too Far", and it covers many aspects of the entire Arnhem conflict that were encountered by the British paratroopers.

I can't find an easier way to make it available than on the AHC channel, but it can be seen for free with a 14-day free trial that can be canceled anytime. This does require credit card information however.

Edit: If you do sign up then you can also catch this great video. It's a real eye opener
seeing that, Major Tony Hibbert, the 1st Parachute Brigade's brigade major made an escape at the end of the above video to join up with the Dutch resistance and lead 120 free roaming paras to safety. The video below should demonstrate just how difficult it was to work with the Dutch resistance.

    Edit: Note -
Other secrets about section M, the Dutch arm of British S.O.E., and certain people (person) in the story are not to be released until the year 2031.

The most important and pivotal battle of WW II was the Battle of Britain. If Britain had lost the battle then the Allied victory would have taken far longer and been far more tenuous. Not mentioned, probably because it occurred beforehand, was a little known (scarcely mentioned elsewhere) outcome of the fall of France.

Denying repeated British requests to transfer over 1,000 Luftwaffe pilots which had been captured during the battle of France to remote POW camps in Australia and Canada, France handed the pilots back to Germany when it fell. This happened despite the loss of over 600 Spitfires, hundreds of Hurricanes, and French planes that fought during this battle.

For the Battle of Britain, Germany had 3,000 fighters and bombers against 600 Spitfires and a few hundred Hurricanes. With the influx of return pilots, Germany was able to use its full air forces to attack England and Scotland.

The video below does an otherwise thorough, investigative look at many factors that determined the what, where, when, who, why, and how that helps win the battle that were beyond the bravery of the Royal Air Force pilots.

The Tiger was a real one, the last operational Tiger in the world and the first REAL Tiger to appear in a movie since 1950.

Edit: Despite the brand new tag saying something about daily meltdowns, the only thing being melted down is WW2 history. I've contributed just about all I know now, so further contributions will be few and not daily by any means. I'm sorry somebody took the liberty of committing me to daily contributions, infinitely, in the tag - just as I was finishing up. <this comment has been included in reply #12>

Absolutely correct! The main head liner and star of Fury was the Tiger! It was truly the main attraction of the entire movie.

I forget who said, "Never share the stage with kids or dogs because they steal the show." But, it must have been said before Tigers came into existence.

Edit: With some effort maybe you can own your own Tiger...

Edit: I just found out that it is a hoax. Clint is still alive!
    http://en.mediamass.net/people/clint-eastwood/deathhoax.html

    OP
Although these two Clint Eastwood directed movies aren't known for the tanks in them, they are both very good WW2 films which portray realistic considerations of the battle of Iwo Jima. It was the only battle where the US suffered more casualties than the 21,000 defending Japanese. (over 25,000 casualties)

As Clint Eastwood passed yesterday, I thought that these movies should be included in the thread. It wasn't my original intention to a make a thread post today, but these needed to be included with his passing.
