What sort of performance at 4K can I expect from my 390X gpu? What's the real alternative?

 

Why do you guys keep testing FreeSync monitors when, as you yourself said already, AMD's market share is very low? How about testing a G-Sync monitor for a change?

And yes, we all hope Vega will finally be the killer GPU on AMD's side that we've all been waiting for. But even if it is and even if it becomes available soon and is not just a paper launch it will take months if not a year for the market share to pick up and by then we should have even better displays at this price point or the same quality for less money.

 

Agree, what AMD card can really play at 4K? CrossFiring two 480s? Is that worth it?

(of course driver improvements since the test was done may have changed results a bit).

 

FreeSync costs nothing [licensing wise] to implement, so manufacturers are more likely to implement it and this monitors with it are more likely to come up for review.

Using G-Sync means licensing it off nVidia [and iirc at one point required a dedicated and pricey bit of hardware too], which means paying nVidia, which results in OEMs not bothering with it for the most part.

 

So, basically, it's buzzword bingo in the truest sense. The average customer will not understand anyway but buy it because the monitor ticks more boxes. Even though they might not be the boxes/features one really needs. Funny little bit of marketing, isn't it?
