    Cheers for the info.

Unless I'm misjudging things, it looks as though Ryzen isn't suitable for SLI set ups in that case.

I would like to state I'm impressed though. This CPU is a content creator's delight. I'm very interested in what the lower end Ryzen CPUs bring to the table. I imagine AMD may recapture the low to mid/high range gaming PC market.

I agree, especially since by the time Ryzen 3 and 5 roll out, BIOSes should be more stable and games should be more optimised for Ryzen. Something like the Ryzen 1500X could become perfect for a budget gaming rig.

X8 X8 makes hardly any difference. Never has.

It does seem that companies are shying away from it now though.

As said before, x8/x8 makes zero difference. Also i would say, SLI setups are not suitable for humans :).

It's possible to find arguments either way. I personally believe that the higher the resolution, the more PCIe bandwidth matters.

SLI is becoming more niche though (even more than it was), as you say. However, there are still surround set ups to consider. Hmm. I wonder how many gamers actually use surround gaming? I'd say less than 4K, which is in itself a tiny proportion. A shame, as it's incredible for flight sim style games.

Considering immature BIOSes and drivers I think this is looking good!
Mine is already on order, though sadly it won't be delivered until after the 10th it seems. I decided to save some cash and ordered the 1700 rather than the 1800X as I don't really need XFR (I will be OC-ing that beast manually anyway), and spent the money I saved on faster RAM as well as a new soundcard instead. Will be interesting to see how the 65W 1700 fares with my cooling system on top of it. I'm hoping it should push at least to 4GhZ.

M.2 has its own PCI-E 3.0 x4 straight from the CPU in addition to the 16 PCI-E 3.0 for GPU use.
Only the second M.2 slot present on a small number of boards has to go through the chipset.

As a long time multi GPU owner I am with you PeteJ, 8x/8x does reduce ultimate performance as does the PLX switch to get extra lanes on systems like my z77 or z170 for 3 or 4 GPUs so really you want these systems to have more PCI-E lanes, I also have NVMe drives and I would like to add another but there aren't enough PCI-E lanes to do so :(

Platforms need to catch up with technology.

Whilst Multi GPU has fallen out of favour a bit with the switch to DX12 etc, I can't imagine that'll be the case for ever, If there is one thing that suits a high level parallel processing that is pushing pixels, easiest way to add more GPU cores is to pop in another card.

Red vs Blue all over this comment section. It's been too long since that happened!
I'll be waiting for the cheaper Ryzens and mITX boards for my mostly gaming oriented rig but I'll definitely enjoy giving Intel the finger when I do.

Not everyone games at 1080 and 4k there's a bit in between lol

From what I am starting to hear there is no point in buying the 1800x. The 1700 is clocking to pretty much the same speeds and is far cheaper.

    Oh yeah, and.

It only has a 65W TDP to which is a huge plus :thumb:

I'm sure I read somewhere (in fact I think it was Bit's own review) that there isn't any structural difference between the 1700, 1700X and 1800X other than clockspeed, and they are basically binned versions of the same silicon. If that's the case, then I'm a bit surprised that a 1700 clocks to the same speed as an 1800X... I'm also unsure how the 65W TDP of the 1700 measures up once you clock the nuts off it (both in absolute terms and relative to a 1700X or 1800X that have been similarly clocked).

It'll be an educated marketing push that they will sell more CPUs at point X than point Y, its all coming of the same wafer.

Ok, the fringe benefit of the 1700 having a 65W TDP is because it produces less heat at stock (it boosts to 3.7GHz) it can use LP coolers and be a prime candidate for ITX builds - it also appears to be an excellent clocker with some hitting 4.1 - 4.2GHz, it's also the cheapest of the three CPU's.

Oh, I absolutely agree - I'd get the 1700 all day long, as I'd rather have a cooler chip at stock for my mITX build (assuming of course that there were any mITX boards, but that's another story! :D) Until we see some more side-by-side overclocking results of the 1700, 1700X and 1800X all being pushed to the max then it's tricky to say if the two more expensive chips are worth it.

Assuming that the 1700 does clock up to the same ceiling as the 1700X or 1800X, then those two more expensive CPUs look like terrible propositions. That's why I'd be surprised if they didn't have a little more headroom than the 1700, but that's not to say that it's beyond the bounds of possibility for them all to have the same upper limit.
