This has been happening recently and I have no idea why. If I download and install a bit of software ists desktop icon will insert itself between existing icons. I am quite minimalist and I only have 7 icons on my desktop, which are :
    This PC
    Control Panel
    Network
    Recycle BIn
    Games
    Tools
    My files
The software I have installed will insert its icon in between anywhere between the above list and I have no idea how to stop this happening.

From what i remember when i looked into why Windows insists on placing new icons in random places on the desktop instead of after the last icon it was something to do with a bug in auto arrange and viewing by type.

In the end i gave up trying to find a solution and just learnt to live with files i downloaded randomly choosing a location on my nice orderly desktop, i know that's not a solution but thought I'd chime in to say you're not the only one who gets annoyed by this. :)

I highly recommend software such as fences for keeping the desktop tidy, I paid for the $10 package years ago and use it on 3 PCs but there are ways of getting it cheaper...

    I second Fences!

I think it's great, I use it on my desktop and it keeps everything tidy.

    same. :D

I use objectdock to hide mine off screen and hide desktop icons. I have noticed that whenever W10 updates it re arranges all my desktop icons to the left side.... gave up in the end and hid them all!
