(Seriously though: they've got this fancy-pants server stacked with SSDs, multiple RAID cards and whatnot, yet couldn't be arsed to think of even the simplest of backup solutions? They're tech-savvy guys with a fun YT channel, absolutely, but this honestly comes across as quite amateur-ish.)

Well, more than a few times... :worried::p
And on top of that I even run a little server without proper backup solution myself... but the difference is that their livelihoods, the working of their company, depends on theirs. You can see the sheer panic over potentially losing everything on that server. Hardware fails, and if you rely on it, you need to have a backup plan ready - a literal backup plan in this case.
What makes it even more unfortunate is that they run a massive YouTube channel all about hardware and technology. I would get it if just some small company were to forget about a backup strategy, they don't know any better, but if anyone should've taken care of this stuff, it should've been these guys. They thought of RAID cards and UPSs, but forgot the most basic element of reliability: at least having a extra copy of your data somewhere.

I can only hope they did learn their lesson so they never have to face such a crisis again (even if it all turns out fine).

EDIT: Reading the comments it seems they moved or something and had yet to back everything up when this happened. Which at least makes this more understandable (though apparently the move already happened a while back and they still hadn't started the backup). I missed this in the video, but apparently they also used a very fragile combination of RAID 5 and Windows software RAID on top of it. Should hire a better data guy methinks.

they moved about 6 months ago, got bought out by Nvidia, and then had to replace a bunch of other (actually mission critical/workstation) hardware, and have been planning and speccing a big off line backup.. they've mentioned it in the petabyte array video's a bunch of times..

they even said they were working on the backup solution, and were documenting it, WHEN the server went down.

on the other hand, a motherboard failure taking out TWO raid cards, A raid extender card AND wiping the virtual definitions at the same time WAS pretty unlikely.

on the other hand, how many petabyte+ backup solutions can you come up with? other than a bunch MORE platters?

In order to watch that I had to figure out how to bypass YouTube's age verification while in incognito mode, since there's no way in hell that I want YouTube thinking I have a fart fetish (this is apparently a thing).
