True, but just like how you don't need a top-end X370 board to get the most from Ryzen, I suspect there will be more "value" options with X399 than X299.

 

Are the specs for the R3 a typo? It says 4 cores 4 threads, shouldn't it be 8 threads.
Ignore ^^that^^ as i just remembered the R3 has SMT disabled.

Also does anyone know if there's been any more info on the rumors that the R3 would still use two CCX's.

Now there's a influx of multi-cored CPU's I can't wait for more software to start making use of all the cores. At least the incentive is finally there.

 

The 7820X is £530 inc vat, the 12c TR is £618 without vat. Of course with 4 more cores and 36 more pci-e lanes that is still good value if you have a use for that kind of performance.

 

Long live AMD. They're here to stay and play ball.

Cya in 3 years when you can use a 16 core 32 thread cpu in the desktop work space. £1000 is still a horrible price to pay for a cpu no matter who manufactures it, Its resonable compared to what Intel charges sure. Are you buying one cause its so reasonable?

AMD also have a problem that they made, There EPYC 7401P 24c/48t CPU is about $1075 with more cores better memory support and a better more stable motherboard for the work its aimed at. Why would you buy a $999 threadripper when you can buy a EPYC with 8 more cores and 16 more threads for $75 more.

I stand corrected on the price. I do recall that the price was higher a couple of weeks ago but maybe I have had a brain freeze after so many Treasury Management system meetings this week...

 

3.4ghz is hardly a big jump and if your buying these cpus your work is going to be highly multi threaded where the clock speed matters very little.

Clock speeds will only really matter below a certain core work stack, Intel Xeon are usually below 3ghz and sometimes even closer to 2ghz.

It will be interesting to see the bench figures, AMD loves cinebench mark, let's see the 2 compared my feelings EPYC will destroy threadripper.

 

With properly threaded workloads like Corona render and such Epyc will no doubt slaughter Ripper, the problem will be what percentage of software that a prospective buyer uses that scales beyond how many cores.

 

I would suggest that applies to most software in usage today, what % of software even supports 8 cores properly that are not benchmark tools.

I feel like if you need 16 cores you probably want even more. For $75 more it's a easy decision considering it will be the cheapest bit of the build.
