BTW fiat currencies are not backed by a precious metal, they have no intrinsic value.

People buying hardware for mining can remain irrational for longer than gamers can wait (or something like that).

Even when Eth was at $1400 it was completely stupid to pay the inflated prices for GPUs to use them for mining as it would have taken far too long to pay them off (and time is money in the mining world due to difficulty adjustments and so on).
Now GPUs aren't even worth buying for mining purposes at MSRP, but of course there are still miners out there investing in hw despite that as evidenced by prices not having returned to "normal" yet.
So unfortunately it may be a long time until it is all sorted out.

And here's a accessible little video further expanding on how they work

I still think they should be outlawed, though.

Were the cards on the stock BIOS ? Certainly with (non-Vega) AMD, a mining orientated BIOS can massively increase hash rate - still not enough to make it profitable at the moment, but a little closer to "just about pays for the electric"

We considered doing this but due to it being a higher barrier to entry for your normal user compared to just an overclock or using compute mode we decided against it. I also didn't fancy potentially bricking a card :).

No chance of bricking it when you’ve got so many spares. It’s super easy to fix. ;)

Nice article, I hope to see more like this in the future. One small thing I noticed, when describing SHA-256 it says that computing the reverse is difficult and thus it is a secure method of encryption - SHA is not an encryption algorithm and this process is not encryption nor decryption.

Not those AMD cards. We have surprisingly few of those.

Once everyone cops on to the fact that it is not economically viable to mine with GPU's, there will be a slew of "honest guv, only one careful owner" second hand cards hitting the market which will drop second hand prices. At least new prices should recover to realistic levels.

Until then I'm sure the finest names in etail will be milking the cash cow for all it's worth however.

1080Ti prices still well and truly take the piss!!

There already are. This forum is just a bit behind is all.

Is the best deal I have seen. 1080Ti are going from £550-£650. A Strix sold yesterday for £640. 480s are commanding about £180. and prices for 970s and 980s has dropped off considerably. Saw a 980 go for £140 last week etc. In fact, the only cards you can't get are the Vega series as I guess they are still worth bothering with. 980ti are back to £250 and lower too which is nice to see, given they were worth that a year ago and tech has not moved on unless you consider £3500 a good buy.
