Suicide Squad - Hell to Pay (2018) This really surprised me! I've seen the previous animations e.g. Justice League Dark, Teen Titans but they are no way near as entertaining or brutal as this. It's like they created an adult version compared to the previous animations that now includes violence, real death and gore. Highly recommended. I'd say that you could watch this as a standalone film i.e. you don't need to have watched previous animated movies
Absolutely this. Look at the Best Aliens: dude feels pretty confident in sticking his face over the egg 'cos he's wearing a sealed spacesuit with whackin' gert helmet (which fails to protect him, but he didn't know that until it was too late); dude feels pretty confident in sticking his face over the egg 'cos he's just some random colonist who has had no training in Not Sticking Your Face Over Weird Alien Eggs 101. The Worst Aliens: "hey, this place is weird, think I'll take my protective equipment off and CHUFFIN' POKE THINGS," with a side-order of "well, if the creepy android dude who may or may not have just contributed directly to the death of one or more of my crew members says it's safe, then who am I to argue?" Despite what I'm assuming is higher budgets, the world-building feels weaker as well - possibly 'cos from Prometheus onwards Scott's been concentrating less on humans with cool stuff versus inexplicable alien killing machine over the course of a day or two and more on woo ancient precursors seeding the galaxy over billions of years LOOK HOW VAST MY VISION IS I TOTALLY DIDN'T COAST ON GIGER'S TALENT GUYS. It's visible even with the equipment, which I think you referenced vis-a-vis the tech downgrade: in Aliens the Colonial Marines get the awesome Armat M41A Pulse Rifle, painstakingly crafted from a .45 ACP Tommy Gun and bits from a pair of different shotguns plus a shedload of plastic and fibreglass to create something truly original; in Alien: Covenant they get... pretty much off-the-shelf AR-15s and Thales F90s with extensions to hide the barrels.
I'm a whole 3 minutes in and already my pedantry is getting in the way of my enjoyment - the altitude sensor on the ship is in metres but the computer voice announces the same number in feet.
I feel like all the wrong people get employed for continuity on some films. And perhaps aren't as involved as they should be.
You're assuming anyone making Alien films cares about continuity. Ridley Scott certainly doesn't, Covenant is essentially a 2 hour temper tantrum directed at everyone who questioned or didn't like Prometheus. Not that it matters, the Dark Horse comic series is the definitive sequel to Aliens and nothing anyone can do will change my mind about it. Not that Aliens actually needed any kind of sequel to begin with.
Yeah but that's reality mate! Remember when NASA lost the Mars Climate Orbiter because of an imperial/metric mess up? I'll give it a watch at the weekend and try and watch it as being nothing to do with Alien, I actually quite enjoyed Prometheus when I viewed it as a complete standalone-never heard of Ripley or space egg-movie.
Peter Rabbit. Aka The Lad, Peter Rabbit. Sponsored by Harrods and the City of London tourism board. The script writers decided to dig up Beatrix Potter, open her mouth and take a gigantic dump in it. OR It's a government ploy to increase renewable energy by attaching magnets to her feet, putting her in a dynamo and having her generate electricity as she'll be perpetually spinning in her grave. 0/10. It has no redeeming qualities. Just shouting animated animals, slapstick violence and trying to be funny quips.
I noticed that, and so much other stuff. I still enjoyed it, but by the end the number of "because plot" occurrences was getting a bit silly. Things like Spoiler hey, the hydraulics to shut the garage door are shafted but it's OK 'cos it has a manual crank... on the outside. Of the spaceship. Which is in space. Because obviously you'd want to shut the door from the outside. Leaving you in space. That makes much more sense than putting the crank on the inside.
Snowpiercer 7/10 Pretty nice action movie. The main plot's a bit predictable, but there are some genuine surprises and twists along the way. It's a fun idea, executed well. Would gladly watch again if it happened to be on tv or something. The Master should rewatch/10 Impressive acting by everyone involved and I was captivated for the 2 hours running time, but I'm still not sure whether it's genius or just pretending to be. Spoiler Though the lack of turns in the story and major, transformative arcs in any of the characters is probably kind of the point. At the end of the film Freddie is just as sick as at the beginning, he's still an empty husk of a man, just going through a different routine. Should watch the movie again some time. As a character piece it's definitely not as good/interesting as There Will Be Blood (from the same director) though. Lovely soundtrack by Jonny Greenwood in any case.
Ready Player One - 8/10 Ok, so I love these kinds of movies. I make no excuses. It's good Speilberg-y fun. Sure; they stripped a lot away from the book (they always do), but what remains still makes for an entertaining ride. Pacific Rim 2: Uprising - F**KYEAH!/10 Remembering my scoring of the original Pacific Rim as "H**L YEAH!/10 I felt that this one deserved to be taken up a notch. It's loud, it's brash, it's bigger than before! It's a mindless action-adventure-sci-fi flick so full of plot holes and incosistencies that you will have to leave your brain by the door, or preferably by the popcorn machine in the lobby. It's also a whole lot of giant robot fun! What could be better than that? I for one enjoyed it a great deal (as did the missus btw), and it was pretty much a two hour long nerdgasm watching giant robots pound the crap out of eachother. It also sets the stage very nicely for another follow up, which, considering the statement on screen, should be even bigger, louder and more brash than the previous two put together. It was the perfect way of rounding off a sunday night.
At the door, or in a large jar? agree fully. Its a case of, sod the plot holes heres the plan. An yes does set up nicely for another which cant be a bad thing.
Yep, this. It's a destruction-porn mecha-gasm/10 I did an on-the-fly supercut of just the fights because my boy doesn't tolerate the people yabbering, and it was great. I've no idea what the story was but it was ~45 minutes of robot action.
Literally just: Spoiler opening fight on the beach ->skip to-> fight in Sydney -> fight in Arctic -> last 1/3 against mega Kaiju
