    Doesn't Noctua include an adapter that drops their standard fans' to something like 5v, is the idea of a fan specifically built for 5v that it spins at the same speed as a 12v one, if so why not use a faster 12v fan and fit the adapter?

    A 5V, 2,000RPM fan running at 5V: 2,000RPM.
    A 12V, 2,000RPM fan running at 12V: 2,000RPM.
    A 12V, 2,000RPM fan running at 5V: anything from "doesn't work" to about 500RPM, fan-dependant.
    A 5V, 2,000RPM fan runnning at 12V: anything from 8,000RPM to THERE'S SHRAPNEL IN MY EYE OH GOD SOMEBODY CALL AN AMBULANCE AAAAARGH IT HURTS SO MUCH.

    I still have some of these in a box under my desk.



    I used them with a fan controller so that during normal operation they were 'reasonably' loud. When my Athlon XP got too hot though, I could crank them to full speed to dump hot air from my case at an alarming rate. Only minor side effects such as blood dripping onto your shoulders.

    If anyone wants one 'for science', then let me know.

    Long shot, but I don't suppose you could tell me how "hard" the fan blades are? Got an idea for a potential article/post

    I've taken a 12V up to 28V before, and I still have sight in both eyes.

    PARDON?! (I used to have one of them massive top-down cube heatsinks with the chocolately centre - Thermalright Something? I forget - which had a 60mm Delta strapped on top. Straight 12V, no undervolting or speed control. There's a reason they called those 'Screamers...')

    They are a hard plastic of similar or identical plastic to the shroud. I would describe the blades as stiff (i.e. they give a little when pressed hard with a finger but don't flex a lot)

    I used to run two 360mm rads and a fat 240mm in my old LiLi box with all the fans dialled back to ~ 5v.. heavily overclocked but whisper quiet.
