I remember seeing a mod a while ago where copper rod (2mm diameter?) was used in place of 18AWG wiring, allowing precise bends to get a set of perfectly symmetrical cables for a 24 pin cable run. Despite a bit of searching I cant find it anywhere. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction or at least tell me I dreamt it and it wont work for x or y reason.
I remember that although I think it was brass rods rather than copper. I seem to recall it was someone who posted it on the overclock.net forum
I don't recall it being done for 24 pin atx but for a 6 or 8 pin atx as it allowed the 12 V and return pins to be a bused, thus only two rods per connector. If you want to make your own cable that is straight and has sharp bends, replace the #18 AWG stranded copper wire with #18 solid core, or if you want really stiff #16 AWG. Plus it will be insulated so no accidental shorts. If you want a bare look consider enameled coated wire.
I remember this too. It was done for the gpu pci power cables and for the 8pin Mobo power connection, possibly on separate mods. They did then insulate the rod too. Possibley Melobee?
Sorry, I’m going with some enamaled single core 18awg. I didn’t find the build. @Dr. Coin ’s description was exactly what I was after and RS can deliver tomorrow.
Rubbish on the broken pics. That wasn’t the one I was thinking of. Here is where the cable needs to go. A full 70mm run.
You can still see his albums though, it's just the picture links in the posts are linking to old forum albums. Just go to https://forums.bit-tech.net/index.php?search/&type=xengallery_media, enter "Meelobee" in "Posted by", go to page 4 or so, done. And you will get his whole gallery, including pictures like :
It's not the one I originally thought of either, but it was the first one I came to trawling through all the morm articles. Haha
Jig made: I'm awaiting ATX Terminals and 24 pin ATX Connectors that are in the post, then I can start soldering connectors on and sticking everything in the connectors and hopefully making everything square and neat. Currently looks like this with the cable just stuck in: I have offset the power board (lined up with motherboard), so no cross over will be required (I think)
The individual wires are quite difficult to straighten and keep straight. Not sure I like it, I might have to go with a thicker gauge of wire, feedback?
Several tips and tricks on the web for straitening wire. Home made jewellery folks are a good source. Additional you could build a custom wire comb for the horizontal run.
