News Google's Chrome browser celebrates its first decade

Apparently it's causing issues with alpha opacity in WebGL too.

 

I've tried Chrome several times over the years, still use Opera...

 

Opera actually got a bit too Chromey for my tastes so I'm now using Vivaldi hah.

 

I also use Vivaldi, mainly for those sites that don't play well with Opera. I've been too lazy to properly setup Vivaldi for use as my main browser.

 

I only use Chrome for sites that still insist on using Flash... that's about it.

 

Dunno if it's just me, but as of this evening Chrome no longer seems to show your "frequently used" tiles on the homepage. Grrr, as this was (is?) genuinely useful.

 

They started autoremoving/autohiding bits of the URL/URI as well with Chrome 69.

With Google having this big push for "internet safety" (haha) and the popularity of phishing sites with similar-but-subtly-different URLs... you'd have thought that someone, somewhere, maybe in the Chrome team would have pointed out that autohiding "www." and "m." was a bad, bad idea almost worthy of an Ignobel Prize...?

Fortunately it can be turned off. But I fear for the sort of non-tech-savvy users who are the ones who usually fall prey to phishing attacks, because they won't know about it, or think about it, or care about it, or, indeed... fix it.

If, like me, you find the new look of Chrome 69 to be manifestly worse than the old look, you can revert back:

chrome://flags/#top-chrome-md and select "Normal" from the dropdown under "UI Layout for the browser's top chrome".

Did I mention that the new look is absolutely bogging?

 

I like bits of the new UI. Well, OK, I'll change that. I like the new tabs style because it fits rather more neatly with the Mint Y Dark theme than the old theme did. But I dislike the rest of it. Fortunately, I only use Chrome on one system regularly. I'm slowly, slowly getting used to Firefox Quantum, but still hate that most of the addons I used either a) still don't work or b) now are terribly temperamental. Quantum basically made Firefox a slightly more customisable version of Chrome. All I want is DownThemAll back, because that was super useful.

Thanks for the tweak back to classic UI, though.
