I've decided that my current RAID card could do with a bit of an upgrade considering that it's responsible for making almost all of the HDDs in my system play nicely together (and don't worry @Gareth Halfacree I know that RAID isn't backup - I have multiple backups too ). I'm looking at a LSI Megaraid 9260-8i which has a good reputation even though it's an older card. The ones I'm looking at on eBay almost all don't come with the SFF8087 cables to connect up drives - would something like this work? https://www.amazon.co.uk/VanDeSaiL-...38125979&sr=1-13&keywords=sff8087+4+sata&th=1 Are there better alternatives? I was under the impression that all cables would be fine but then this thread on the OCUK forum https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/which-sff8087-cable.18581468/ would seem to suggest that certain cables are not suitable for connecting directly to drives and some are for backplanes only. Whatever you buy, buy two. There's no guarantee the array will rebuild properly on a different model should the card fail, and no guarantee you'll still be able to pick one up humpty-tump years down the line.
Good idea. They're not an awful lot now second hand - £40 or so extra now could in fact save an almighty amount of hassle later on...
Well I've ordered two of those cards and using eBay's promotion code for today got them down to £33.75 each. Just need to get some cables now. I'm 99% sure that the ones I linked to will be ok but wouldn't mind some reassurance
Pretty sure I bought the very same mega raid card from you a couple of years ago- the miniSAS to SATA cable looks identical. I just used it in a new server build last night - added 20tb of HDDs in RAID to cover all my backup needs. ( Watch Gareth twitch)
Wasn't me... I've only ever owned RocketRaid cards. If memory serves correctly @el2k has sold some on here over the years and possibly @PocketDemon too but that'd be going back a way... Good that the cable appears to be the right one Nothing like a bit of super secure RAID0 for backup eh chap?
You have linked the correct badger for plumbing your card directly to 4 garden variety SATA drives. A backplane connector is more likely to be the another multi-lane one. RAID0 should be nice and secure. As we know it stands for Really Adequate Integrated Data-protection. And the '0' is the grade of data protection, expressed in risk of data loss. So 0 is the best. It's kind of overkill running windows though, which generally means you'll never lose data. You usually only have to worry about data loss on Linux.
