I finally have a platform that supports M.2 drives and I'm looking to upgrade from my Samsung 830 256GB. Currently, I've found two options around the £100 price range. I had planned to go with a Samsung Evo but the 500GB model is double the price of the other two options. I've also read that the move to M.2 isn't very noticeable under normal home use. I don't have any extra SATA ports so if I went with a SATA drive it would take the place of my 830 and I would want to go with at least 1TB. If I get a budget M.2 it will be faster than a SATA drive and I can keep the 830 for games, and go with a smaller M.2 drive.

Are prices expected to drop soon or and is competition expected to increase in the budget segment?

    Kingston A1000 M.2 NVMe 480GB - £94.48
    Intel 660p Series 512GB M.2 SSD - £94.48
    Intel SSD 760p Series 512GB M.2 SSD - £101.93
    Adata XPG SX8200 480GB M.2 SSD - £102.08
    Samsung 970 EVO 500 M.2 SSD - £135.99 (with free game)
    WD 500GB Black NVMe M.2 SSD - £149.98
    Kingston A1000 960GB M.2 SSD - £185.99
    Samsung 500GB 960 Evo - £189.93

You can make use of that m.2 slot with a m.2 SATA SSD- much cheaper than NVMe and still as fast as the best 2.5" SSD, assuming your slot supports both types .

    The cheapest M.2 at eBuyer is the Crucial MX500 M.2 2280 500GB SSD £76.20 (560MB/s - 510MB/s) vs Kingston (1,500 / 900MB/s) and Intel (1,500 / 1000MB/s) for an extra £18.28.
I think I would only go M.2 SATA if I found a really good deal on a 1TB model. I'm hoping that NVMe will have some noticeable improvement as I find my computer hangs when working with large word documents, especially processing references with Mendeley.

    M.2 SATA starts at £76.20
    M.2 NVMe budget £94.48
    M.2 NVMe 960 evo £189.93

I don't mind the premium of a budget NVMe, but I was hoping that it would cause other models to come down

    I upgraded from a z68 / i5-2500k to a z170 / i7-6700k so fuzedrive won't work for me, though it was an interesting read.
I will have to do something similar myself with an M.2 NVMe, SATA SSD and HDD drives.
Currently, I have most games on my HDD due to limited space. With a 500GB NMVe, I can move games between the M.2 and SATA SSD depending on what I'm playing most and the transfer shouldn't take too long. Also, I don't think many games will see much benefit from a faster SSD. Later down the road, I will replace the SATA SSD with a 1-2TB drive when prices come down more.

I read that it suffers from low endurance and inconsistent performance so I was hoping that competition would bring down the price of other drives.
I'm also looking into how to compares to the Kingston A1000.

Shame you don’t get it there (apparently!?) but you can grab a 1TB SATA drive for a great deal these days. I just got myself an 860 EVO for $170 with a free Far Cry 5 code. :)

That's a bit better. The ebuyer site is a bit **** so it didn't see it.

I did a sneaky edit. Cheaper at Scan with a free game.

I think it's just a case of changing the $ to a £ over here at the moment.

    Ananadtech's A1000 review includes comparisons with/to the 600P

If I were in the market for a SSD I'd probably pick between the Intel 760p and the Samsung 970 Evo.

Unfortunately, scan charges for shipping. What do you think I can get selling the ' Assassins Creed Odyssey' key?
CCL has it for the same price with free shipping.

We can definitely get the 1TB 860 EVO in the UK:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Sata-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B078WQT6SB

Just not worth getting it due to this:

You can still use that software there is just at a small cost to it. It would do all the work for you in the background meaning you can add small nvme and have everything on a large normal drive.

Certainly more than the cost of shipping, it's a pretty new game I think

Do Scan still offer free shipping for B-T members? They used to on orders over £20 + vat and that was next day DPD. That was a reason for me to use them at work, as I had a bad experience or 2 with Ebuyer and their frankly useless Yodel service.

Yeah Scan still do free shipping for B-T members :)

Been looking at getting myself a NVMe drive too, for pretty much the same reasons as Silk186. I had come to the conclusion that if the 660p was no good then I was getting a 970 Evo.
