Motherboards Will only power on after removing and reinserting 24 pin plug

I have a Gigabyte H61MA-D3V I bought a couple of months back for these Fortnite builds. Been working fine when built on test bench. Transferred it all to its case and now it will only boot up once I have taken the 24 pin power plug out and back in again. Then it resets BIOS back to 2012 !

If I leave the kettle power cable out of the psu but leave the 24 pin plug in for just a few minutes, and then put it back in, it won't boot.

If I leave the kettle plug in all the time even with pc switched off it will boot up normally every time.

I can't send this over for my mates kid to use like this. The other build is working fine. It does it on 2 different PSUs, one brand new one and the one on my bench.

The light appears on the GPU even when pc is off so power is getting through to the board. It just won't power up without dicking about with the 24 pin plug.

Bit desperate now as I will have to find another board and a copy of windows 10 as this had one with it.

Any ideas ?

 

It’s resetting the clock which can only mean one thing... dead CMOS battery.

 

Tried that. Made no difference. It will only boot when I remove the 24 pin plug.

 

New problem now. Even if I leave the board plugged in switched on at PSU, If I leave it more than a few minutes then it boots up but straight to bios saying reset again.

 

Hmm... something isn't holding its power correctly. That's bizarre. I've run into this before, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it is.

 

Yep. Just dont understand why unplugging 24 pin and plugging it back in works to power up, but then only to go to bios.

 

Does it need a bios update for the CPU you are using?

 

Just spit balling here but maybe the PSU is holding some charge (like they do) and that in turn is causing an effect on the board, only when you completely remove the 24pin does it allow for the board to boot.

 

Well it worked perfectly before witht this cpu. i5 3330. That's why I am scratching my head.

 

Two different PSUs. One brand new EVGA and my bench runing a 430M corsair.

 

I also think I've had something similar before but can't remember what fixed it. I think the battery is either shorting out and draining or something on the board is shorting and draining it so maybe have a look in the battery area or the retaining clip.

I assume you're reloaded the BIOS just in case it's that?

 

I haven't reloaded the bios but I will try that anyway.

 

Did nothing. Worth a try just to rule it out.

Nope, looked at that !

I cleaned the back off with alcohol too when I cleaned off round the battery area. Just using an Coolermaster cooler with push pins so not cooler mounting either.

I have tried seven batteries, five of which are new and one from a board I bought this week which works fine. Am going to but some new batteries tomorrow decent brand and see wha ahppens. Clutching at straws now.

 

Earth issue.

Remove the board & test it outside the case. If it works fine then it's an earth issue.

 

Same issue in case and on testbench.

 

Very odd. As you already tried two different PSUs, I wonder if the board is faulty? Might be worth RMA'ing it?

 

Its a 100 years old no RMA there !

 

Did you try forcing the board to use the backup bios like the H81M?

If that doesn't help i would remove the GPU completely and try the onboard intel graphics via the DVI socket at the back of the board to see if it's a GPU card problem.
