As some of you may have noticed from my sale threads in the marketplace I'm having a bit of a clear out of hardware I've accumulated. Hardly any of it is used at the moment, even my main PC, and I could also do with some extra cash to put towards a car. What I'm not sure on is what to keep and what to do with what I keep. The current set of hardware I have at my disposal is as follows: Main PC - 3770K, Gene V, 32GB, 2x480GB SSD, 3TB+1TB HDDs, RX480, 850W PSU, Cooler Master ML240L Cooler, Fractal Arc Mini R2 Lounge PC - i3 4160, Silverstone SST-AR06 Argon Cooler, 16GB DDR3 1600, Asus H81I-Plus, 480GB Sandisk SSD, Zotac GTX 1060 6GB, Fractal Node 202 with Fractal 450W PSU i5 Dell Optiplex 3020 x 2 - i5 4590, 16GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 500GB HDD, Intel 4-port Gigabit NIC i3 Dell Optiplex 3020 - i3 4150, 4GB, 500GB HDD All 5 of the above machines have Windows 10 pro licenses. The Dells I got from my old job before they got binned and work perfectly. I also have a Synology DS416Play with 4x6TB drives as my NAS and a FreeNAS server with the following specs: i3 4130, Asrock E3C224D2I, 16GB ECC, 6x4TB Reds, 2x1TB WD Blue, Silverstone DS380 and 450W SFX PSU. The FreeNAS box isn't really being used. I should set it up as a back up to my Synology but haven't quite got around to it. It was briefly in use as a minecraft server once. My only real use cases for a NAS/server are Plex, general storage and backups. I know I could use either to do so much more... So, what to do with all this crap? The lounge PC is basically redundant, hence why it's up for sale in the marketplace. The Dells aren't currently used at all and the FreeNAS server is barely used as well. I do like to tinker and play around, which is mainly why I've accumulated and kept so much. Sell it all and start again with one PC and one NAS? Sell some and consolidate? Keep it all, mine on everything to keep the house warm over winter? Send me your ideas and thoughts on what to do with all this.
The '3 places' rule means that you need you main PC + NAS + backup NAS [+playing with machine] in another location to protect your data. That leaves the Node 202 redundant and for sale as mentioned, if you're feeling like hoarding, keep an Optiplex, or rationally sell all 3. I'm told that an i5 Optiplex with a low profile GTX1050TI GPU in it is a nice little gaming PC if you're not too demanding on having all the goodies turned up You're not alone here in accumulating 'useful' kit... I have 1 1/2 spare PCs at the moment at home, and don't know what to sell and which parts to use for a 'spare' PC that won't get any use week to week! As for that lovely N40L Microserver, I REALLY must get it put in the conservatory, so it's away from the office and actually useful as a 3rd repository for important data...
If I didn't already have the lounge PC then I'd probably have done just that. I did toy with the idea of taking the i5 out of one of them and putting in the lounge PC, but I don't know how much difference it would make (and I'd actually have to use it to notice). I might get more interest in the marketplace if I did that and putting the i3 into the Optiplex would still make it a decent machine for someone.
30+ PC's in my house atm, numerous graphics cards, RAM, motherboards and power supplies. Can't seem to find the time to get it all listed for sale though. I'll hoard them til my wife leaves me.
That sounds like a very particlar niche. Or is that just how the photo makes it look? Thankyouthankyou, remember i'm here for all your lame joke needs
I had a slightly similar problem. Found I owned seven laptops amongst all the other stuff. I sold some, gave some away, and binned the rest. It all depends what your goal is I suppose.
Meh, just flog the stuff that you're not using any more. I did pretty much the same thing and, across bit tech, ebay and local free ads, I paid for my XPS 15 + eGPU and made about three grand to boot. Yeah, the missus did discover a number of household items that suddenly needed replacing, but a fair chunk of that money went towards my new car.
This thread has made me wonder what I actually have in the loft. Guess i'll see when we finally move. Maybe a time for a new year clear out/repurpose.
