Hold on. Why is this the first I've heard of this change? Are we expecting AMD/Nvidia to follow suit? What about smaller more specialist hardware companies? CNC machines, graphics tablets, etc. With Microsoft's current track record, I'd rather get drivers directly from manufacturers!

    So Microsoft decide something unilaterally?

And it's probably a good thing that they dropped the moniker "Windows Modern Driver"... whatever bright spark thought that up obviously didn't bother to think about acronyms...

I 'unno: Microsoft published documentation about it back in April, but at the time no IHVs came forward to say "yes, let's do that." Until now, obviously.
If they want to continue releasing Windows 10 drivers... yeah, pretty much.
    Samesies.
I mean, in Microsoft's defence(!) the drivers are still written by the IHVs; that hasn't changed.
    Plus ça change.

In the spirit of fairness hardware vendors can get the driver to automatically download GUI apps from the store in the background, make of that what you will as to me it seems to open as many problems as it solves.

I dunno, considering how many times Window's updates have nuked my machines, I think it was pretty appropriate.

Most of them haven't even gotten around to signing their drivers yet, so much of a muchness there.
