It's bizarre eh, I tend to find cheap tat is overly protected in oversized boxes and yet as things get more expensive the packaging gets worse.

Is that Amazon's handywork? Put the picture up on their Facebook page too, so more people see it.

It's from a real IT outlet, one that should know better.

Last time I bought HDDs in bulk, Scan just gave me the shipping carton they received the drives in. Closed-cell foam that held each HDD tightly in place inside the box.

Kinda like this one. (I think I still have it... somewhere...)

I was always a fan of Seagate's SeaShell clamshell packaging, when coupled with the end-caps. Floats the thing quite nicely in the middle of the box!

I've sent them the pic, asking if they really think that's okay. We'll see what they think, and then I'll decide whether to name and shame.

Same... These didn't have any such treatment: bagged inside the individual boxes, with an extra layer of cardboard folded around them inside for some token protection.

They're all reporting healthy fortunately, so far 12% building the storage pool set to full speed ahead. Drives can take a fair amount of punishment when not spinning... I'd just rather they didn't.

All seems to be well so far, though I've pinged the pic over to someone I know at Seagate to give an unbiased opinion of whether I should demand replacements.

And onward and upward with the home IT overhaul...

10Gbit NIC for the NAS (intel X520-DA2), and a couple of DAC cables

    And a Unifi US-16-XG switch...

Found one of my old 80mm Delta "Screamer" fans the other day. I only ever made the mistake getting my fingers caught on those blades once :jawdrop:

Not so much a fan as a Colin Furze level meat slicer...

I bought a 120x38mm Delta beast many moons ago... not to use it (obviously), just because.
First time it spun up it launched itself off the desk and I instinctively went to grab it, fortunately I grabbed the side with the air-guide (or whatever it's called) before realising that this was a terrible idea and let it drop.

My arcade machine has an 80mm, 240V, metal-bladed fan in it. Without an internal finger guard. You'd better believe I treat that one with respect...

..How have you resisted the urge to add a finger guard?

It's super-annoying to get to. Should have fitted one when I replaced the fan, but I didn't have any in the spares pile at the time.
