Time to upgrade the games on test. Some of them are no challenge whatsoever.

Anybody else looking at this graph, thinking that the gap in specs between 2080 and 2080 Ti is suspiciously large?

There's always room for shoe horning something else in. But what would they call it? 2080T, 2080i, 2080RTO? 2080.5 maybe?

Oh, god, flashbacks to the days when programs were entered line-by-line and you had to leave space for inserting new lines...

    10 PRINT "THE MEMORIES"
    20 GOTO 10

    Wait..

    10 PRINT "THE MEMORIES"
    15 PRINT "THEY BURN"
    20 GOTO 10

    Wait...

    10 PRINT "THE MEMORIES"
12 PRINT "THEY'RE ALL COMING BACK"
    15 PRINT "THEY BURN"
    20 GOTO 10

The RTX 2060 kinda reminds me of the GTX 670 - Once overclocked it's within spitting distance of it's older brother, but considerably cheaper.

In that sense, compared to an RTX 2070/Vega 64/GTX 1080 Ti, it is impressive value for money (and efficient).

    2080Ti LE
    2080 Ultra

Or release a 2070Ti with the same specs and performance as the current 2080 and then rework the 2080 mid-life and keep calling it the 2080 - shenanigans.

It depends on what games actually need before having performance issues.
Every game for the last decade or two has always attempted to fill every available byte of vRAM with cached textures, just looking at "Game X uses 7GB of vRAM, 6GB is not enough!!1!" is meaningless if 6GB of that is preloaded textures rather than model and texture data actually needed to render the current scene, and 5GB of that is textures that won't be visible until 20 minutes away at the end of the level and is only resident in vRMA because why would you not load it if the vRAM is otherwise emtpy. Accurately distinguishing between the two would likely require both a debugger (e.g. API trace or GPU trace) and a debug mode for the engine to flag in-use vs. cached data.

Aye, VRAM used isn't the same as VRAM needed.

Optimising games has become less of a priority, it seems.

Interesting video on getting 60fps locked on a 2060 in BF5

So yes that 6GB VRAM is a major problem but you can tweak settings and get ray tracing working well.

Imo this is just another hint it's early days - dev's need more time to work getting games well optimised - but it does look like 2060 will be fine for 1080p raytraced gameplay in the end.

is what I immediately thought, better to confuse people into thinking it's a fully fledged 2080Ti that's cheaper, then letting people think it's an expensive version of a 2080 that can be found cheaper by getting the normal one.

When was the last LE released? 7600?

Must be overdue for a comeback :p:

The reason it's a 6gb card and not an 8 is because in cutting down the chip, ypu lose 2 memory controllers. If you kept with 8gb of vram then you'd end up with another 970 situation where memory controllers get split between the vram and that would affect performance once you got past 6gb usage. Considering the backlash they got for the 970 shenanigans I don't think they'll ever do that again.

Games end up optimised for general usage: the Medium and High settings. Ultra/Nightmare/etc settings are not optimised pretty much by definiton, because they're the result of seeing what happens when you set that INT to 255 rather than a reasonable value. Their purpose is not improved visual quality under actual usage, but bragging rights for those who like to just shove all the available sliders to the right end stop.
A shame, given the 970 performed so astonishingly poorly that the memory R/W contention was discovered right away and fingered as the cause.

No, wait, the opposite of that.

The whole furore over the 970 always struck me as a bit odd. Regardless of how the memory was configured, it performed well - and identically in the real-world as in reviews, so you got what you expected in terms of performance.

I personally didn't have an issue with it. My 970 has done me proud, especially since she clocks like a downright dirty whore. I wouldn't be replacing it if I hadn't have got a hand-me-down 980ti. But the mass backlash from a lot of people, many of whom hadn't even bought one, was quite spectacular. No matter what the performance was like, Nvidia would have to be up front about it and that would drag the 970 debacle up again and would be a major marketing/pr headache.

I'd agree wholeheartedly with you there, I had a few 970's pass through my paws for one reason or another; they all OC'd well and in general other than the PR nightmare they became for Nvidia, the 970 was/is a great all round card.

Now, where did I explicitly talk about max settings? ;)

Games in general seem to be developed with the mindset "Make it run on an average pc on medium. Never mind memory or CPU usage. Joe Average doesn't understand or care and PCs have become stupid powerful anyway. Nobody will notice it if we ship it without optimisation", which is just plain lazy.

Proper optimisation is something games like Doom 2016 did very well. But they're few and far between.
