E.U: Leave or Stay? Your thoughts.

That's not how i interpreted the act.

The act sets out what it covers and that's 1) Duties in connection with A50 extension, 2) Procedure for ensuring domestic legislation matches A50 extension, and 3) Interpretation, commencement, extent and short title.

What part do you consider has required and extension be sought beyond the 22nd of May?

 

From the wording of the bill:

 

Yes but that requirement is not repeatable, is it?

I think that only places a requirement on the government to move a motion once, on the day or day after that bill comes into force, i can't see what would prevent the government presenting a bill to parliament saying, in effect, does this house agree to the PM asking for an extension no shorter than the 22nd of May.

And if they agree to that there's nothing, from what i can tell, that forces the government to come back to parliament for a second time, say if we get to the 22nd of May and want a third extension.

She has already agreed to seek an extension and written to the EU about it.
So its only about getting the specifics (date) of the extension approved by MPs on the UK side.

 

I think the short extension talk may be moot. If I were the EU i'd either want us out right now or give an extension till the end of the year or beyond and we would sit EU elections.

We've messed them about too much already.

 

Well the vote passed... 420 - 110, so at least the date the UK wants is known now as 30th June (of course if the EU says yes or no remains to be seen).

 

I very much doubt the end of June, it'll mess with elections.

I can see them thinking what if we come back then and want an extension, we'll have not taken part in the elections and that will cause a whole lot of more headache.

Edit: If we do get a short one (which is in the air), it''l probably be May 22nd as Parliament said no earlier and I imagine the EU don't want it much later unless it's much, much later.

 

The draft version from the EU is out, basically if we don't take part in the elections it sets a hard deadline of 1st June, deal or no deal. Theoretical max length if we take part in the elections still up in the air (to be decided at the Summit).

 

I don't think the EU are thinking this through enough.

They should give us at least a year on the condition of a new referrendum, BUT, they should also grant our MEPs immunity from the Euro Elections until after the referrendum. Then we hold our elections later and the new British MEPs have a slightly shorter term until the next round.

Why should they do this? For a few months the MEPs from Britain will be holding unelected seats, making them Unelected European Bureaucrats. More speciifcally, Nigel Farage will be an Unelected European Bureaucrat, I want them to do it just to see if he and his support base can survive the logical paradox this will create without suffering a fatal aneurysm.

 

Am I missing something about the 'No Deal' option?
I have followed the ins & outs since 2016 and think I have a fair idea of where we are.
My understanding is that if we wish to have any sort of trade deal with the EU, we will have to agree to / put in place some of the options in the WA that the hard Brexit people are objecting to and want to avoid...

 

Some countries (like for example France and Croatia) are getting more seats in the EU parliament due to Brexit... and the EU can't tell its own members to elect less MEPs than they are entitled to for the sole sake of accommodating the political chaos in Westminster.

So the UK having to either take part in the election properly or gtfo before the new parliament starts will be an absolute red line for the EU.
