Apparently many reviewers are seeing these phones fail rapidly. Maybe bendy screens are a step too far...

We can have nice things; we just shouldn't open the internet to anyone who isn't a card-carrying geek. Let's go back to the Usenet days.

Given that the internet has been kicking off about Terrifying Toddler Sonic since the first image of his legs were leaked, there's no way this came as a surprise to anyone. The cynic in me is saying that the studio's had a more game-like design the entire time, and Terrifying Toddler Sonic only exists in the trailer and posters so that they can grab a bunch of column inches and plaudits for 'fixing' it so soon before release.

Yeah, this isn't a "CGI over Superman's moustache" fix, re-doing the main CGI character in his own movie would be a HUGE job. No way in hell this is only being sorted now.

I was suspicious why this version looked so poorly done, but now it makes sense!

well they need to do less than you think. they have the Mo-Cap, voice and animations all saved ( or at least i hope they do ) so its basically redesigning sonic, then processing him back through the scenes they have already done with the updated model, sure it will take a while of Computing power to render, but they have done the difficult bits, its mainly rendering time, i mean it took people on the Internet mere hours to hand draw a render...

that being said there wasnt alot in the trailer that really grabbed me, Eggman / Robotnic appears to have been given his acting lessons from Dr Evil for whatever reason
i wasnt to enthralled with Sonics design
the effects aside from sonic dont look THAT bad, but ive seen better

but i would not be suprised if Gareths Theory pans out to be correct, after all, if this was their intention it was worked out beautifully for them, as ive seen quite alot of praise for their decision to go fix it

I'm not an animator or 3D artist, but I'm really not sure it's going to be that easy. If they want to keep the animations they already made, that leaves only very little wiggle room to make changes to the design AFAIK.
The disproportionally long, thin legs for example would have to stay because everything was animated with a rig of that size. Same for the hands. Any size changes could lead to clipping in the model itself and the environment, not to mention changes in composition for sequences that were already planned and filmed. Pretty much all they can change without a whole movie's worth of rework are those horrifying teeth -- which admittedly would already be a massive improvement by itself.

I'm afraid that major design changes so far in the project, with no indicated adjustment to the release schedule, will lead to a lot of people having to pull a lot of overtime. Hope the animators, modellers etc. working on this are properly unionized.

TBH I wouldn't have minded the original design. The movie's going to be complete garbage anyway, so the aesthetic might as well have fit in. It would've been bad in a memorable way, fondly remembered for years to come as a paradigm of trash video game movies. It would've been fun.
