If the UK leaves without a deal, there is no need for the EU parliament to deal with Brexit at all.
If the UK leaves with a deal, even having 100% of the votes going to the Farage Party wouldn't help, because all member States need to sign off on it.

So I-can't-believe-it's-not-UKIP essentialy gained 5 seats... and in at least 2 of those seats were down to CHUKeminthebindependentsgroup stripping enough votes away from the LDs to hand an extra seat to nu-kip, that was the case in the NE from what i gather.

nu-kip and the LDs did about what the BE numbers forecasted, they cot the greens and the conservatories number the wrong way round and labour also did worse than predicted [but that won't possibly be Saint Jeremy's fault... 'present but not involved', as per].

By my maths -

Brexit - +5
LD - +15
Labour - -10
Conservative - -15
Green - +4
Plaid - no change
SNP - +1

And NI do their own thing with a different system and thus aren't included in these results.

TIL that while the EU votes are PR, unless my maths is really borked, I'm surprised to learn they're a lot less fairly balanced than I expected WRT seats gained.

 

because the D'hondt system used [at least in the mainland uk, NI uses STV] isn't proper PR... it's just more proprtional than FPTP

 

Ah, so everyone who keeps banging on about it being PR, i.e. the BBC, are being a bit disingenuous really. Though that doesn't surprise me as every time I've put them on this morning they've pretty much been pushing the country wants WTO because highest vote was for TBP, ignoring the total vote of remain party votes, whilst also then pointing it out the remain vote.

 

Apparently, 9,489,558 voted for parties explicitly opposed to No Deal Brexit, and/or opposed to Brexit fullstop (LD/ Lab/G/SNP/PC/CH/SF/UUP/All/SDLP/UKEU/WEP) and 5,904,955 for parties explicitly for No Deal (BXP/UKIP/TUV/ED).

So guess what the UK is going to do?

 

I actually think the system seems pretty fair, although I've not read much about it apart from the halving of votes things so don't know what the flaws are....time to go have a proper read.

Flail around and do effectively nothing... like it has for the past 3 years...

 

Basically the problem is that if a smaller party fails to win a seat in any one constituency then those votes for them are effectively deleted and don't accumulate at the national level.

For comparison:

If the entire UK (excluding NI) was one large constituency with 70 seats distributed based on proportional representation rather than a bunch of smaller constituencies using a D'Hondt system then it would have looked something like this:

Farage Party: 22
LDem: 14
Labour: 10
Green: 9
Con: 6
SNP: 3
Soubry Party: 3
Kippers: 2
Plaid: 1

So basically the D'Hondt system gifted the Farage Party as well as the LibDems some extra seats at the expense of the Tories, Greens, Soubry and Kippers.

 

The NI reults are 1 apiece for SF/DUP [unsurprising], and the 3rd seat going to the remain-leaning Alliance Party [at the expense of the brexit-leaning UUP].
