I'm not surprised, not thrilled, but gently impressed and excited.

Given how the Asus mobo PR dude was squirming when 16 cores got mentioned... I reckon it can't be too long before AMD stops playing around and announces it.

Well that didn't last long; PCIe 4.0 CPU lane support now confirmed to be exclusive to 5xx series chipsets, will not be enabled for any existing motherboards.

Makes sense to be honest. Looks like it uses quite a bit more power chipset wise

Plus, how many years/generations of GPU until the extra bandwidth actually makes a difference? Are we even saturating PCI-E 3.0 X16 at 4K yet?

Navi being "Gen. 4" is a bit like Nvidia with ray tracing - it's a USP to add some marketing flavour and techy buzzwords, but it isn't going to make a lot of difference to end users for a while yet...

IIRC the PCIe is more for workstation and scientific type loads on GPUs and for storage more than gaming

It's nothing to do with the chipset. Previously it was announced that direct-fromCPU lanes (not chipset PCIe lanes, those are stuck on 2.0 for all current Ryzen chipsets) would be able to run at PCIe 4.0 speeds with a 3000 series CPU. This has now been reversed, and only boards with X570 (and presumably future 5xx series chips) will support PCIe 4.0 direct from the CPU.
Barely even saturating x8 with a pair of the toppest-of-the-top-end GPUs in SLI.

Also, side note - If the $499 price of the 3900X translates as the usual £499, this could well be the first genuinely top-end CPU I buy since I spent £600 on a QX6850. Would I need that much extra over a 3600/3700? Nope. But it would be a machine built to last a minimum of 6-7 years.

    This.

My current CPU is a 3770K, before that I had one or two stop-gaps, before that I ran a C2D E6600 @ 50% overclock for years. I just want a CPU/mainboard/RAM combo that serves me well for 3+ years.

This is surely because data is also sent over sli/nvlink bridges right?

Depending on IPC and how it plays with 2666mhz DDR4 this could be the first CPU I bought in over 2yrs.

More that it required two GPUs to start saturating the bus with CPU/RAM-to-card traffic before x8 started to noticeably impact performance.

Why is AMD Ryzen 7 3700X TDP 65W and AMD Ryzen 5 3600X TDP 95W, typo?

Probably higher all core turbo and/or longer sustain thereof.
