Retracts earlier aspersions cast @David 's way.

It was probably your tinkering holding the poor girl together.

Bizarre though. RAM doesn't work, other RAM works then doesn't work, old RAM works again. Very odd. Does make you think mobo if the PSU is dandy.

Had this with my last system. Then the same PSU wouldn't start on my current build, which changed mobo, CPU & RAM. Then it would while out of the case. I currently suspect the case power button.

Never a bad time to evaluate what's the oldest link in the chain - if it's the case, @IanW may be on to summat.
That said, and call me old fashioned (metaphorically...) but I still leave my PC switched on 24/7; I get that not everyone does, but...

Had to cancel an upcoming group test, 'cos - unsurprisingly - no bugger really wants to promote their loss-leader entry-level desktops. After the editor said the logistics would be "much easier" this time around (hah!) I burned through nearly a month trying to source machines, and only made it up to seven. I could have gone ahead at that and hoped for some stragglers, but the remuneration just ain't there to justify getting everything done in such a short timescale to hit deadline.

Knocking it on the head does, sadly, mean that the effort I've put in to sourcing goes to waste: there's no kill-fee for that. It also makes it considerably less likely the outlet will approach me for future group tests, which to be honest is probably no bad thing if the budget stays where it is (seriously, £100-odd for dozens of high-quality photographs? There's no way that's what they've been paying their in-house photog.)

Oh yes it is well below stock (~ 61 vs 80) but without the front cover on it stays in the mid 50's and boosts higher.

Now looks like I'll have to un-cancel the group test: seems the editor thinks I'd already agreed to do it, whereas I thought I'd said I'd see if I could get a group together and go from there.

Well, a group of seven it is, then!

No hearing and pain in right ear. Went to doctors Monday and they can't irrigate it due to the pain as it could make me go permanently deaf in that ear. So if It's still bad Monday they'll book me in to see a specialist. Oh the joys.

Yup, group test uncancelled. Which now leaves me with, what, three weeks to receive humpty-tump desktops, benchmark 'em, review 'em, photograph 'em, write it all up, and do all the other toot - like the buyer's guide - that goes with a group test.

Next time I'mma just say no, rather than "I'll think about it."

I'll think about it = Yes. No = Yes. Yes = they'll probably cancel on you.

OK, now things are just getting bloody weird. I came home from work and the PC wouldn't boot.

I pulled the top cover off the case which reveals the edge of the RAM slots, unclipped the RAM, angled each one up about 30 degrees then pushed each one back into the slot. Hit the power button and the PC boots.

In windows I hit restart so I could enter the BIOS, and have a look around. Obviously swapping out the RAM meant it was defaulting to 2400MHz, so I set back to 2666MHz. Not a big change but enough to make the PC power cycle once I'd saved and exited the BIOS.

It didn't power cycle. It just switched off and didn't come back on.

I did the thing with the RAM sticks again and pushed the button, and it boots. I power down and hit the button, it doesn't boot. We do the RAM stick two-step again and it boots. The machine works just fine - gaming, benching, stress-testing - no dramas at all - but it won't power up without me pissing around with the RAM.

What in hell's name is going on? I can't wait for Sunday, when I'll have some time to pull this apart and start experimenting.

Well... put myself on the scales and I’ve successfully got back to almost 15 stone by sheer laziness! At my lowest I was 13st 4... jeeeeezzz!!

Skinny fat some would call it!

On one hand I’ve proved I can put my mind to losing weight and it’s easy to replicate when I just get going.

On another I’m frustrated I spent all that time getting to a point I was really happy to overthink it with “hey losing weight was easy, now to get hench as ****” and instead got back to old podgy me!

Now to find that drive again...

Not remotely claiming any level of expertise, but how old is the build & could it be as simple (relatively speaking) as the CMOS battery?
