"I don't understand car insurance" #28

A pickup that takes 10 seconds to get to 60mph is around 15% more expensive to insure than the 350bhp full-of-esoteric-parts sports wagon it replaced.

 

Perhaps a high level of claims from people using them for work purposes and maybe owners less careful than Polestar owners.

 

There are more variables when it comes to average claim size than just how fast or powerful your car is? Colour me shocked.

Of course there are, the oddity just tickled me, this being at least the 28th time I've thought "man, that's weird and/or surprising" about car insurance.

I thought there would probably be a significant uptick if I insured it for business use, but I didn't - i didn't actually check, but my business use is 100% driving to and parking in airport multi-storeys so won't be taking the truck anyway.

 

All pickup drivers are drunk.

Didn't even think of that, I'm just not in the pickup mindset yet. Delivery on Friday, so by this time next week I'll have developed a penchant for bud light. My nearest female cousin lives ~6000 miles away, so I avoid that pitfall of pickup ownership at least.

My nearest female cousin is only around 230 miles away and, I have a half-sister much closer...







I don't own a pickup, so I suppose they are safe.

 

I'm going to be disappointed in @Mister_Tad if he doesn't get a set of truck nuts.

 

Like ours, it went up a bit moving.

All else being equal we've moved to an area with a lower crime rate both generally and relating to car crime. Oh and there's far less traffic here.

Not sure how that works out.

 

Insurance is just a bunch of guys and gals cutting a head off a chicken and seeing which price bracket it runs into before finally dying.

Then rolling a die to see what the actual number is.

 

My favourite was a few years ago experimenting with job descriptions.

I understand that a knitting specialist may expect a lower premium than a stunt driver.

But the only way I can explain why I saved £80 by cycling through a few job titles that all meant exactly the same thing is the headless chicken method™

Oh i've tried that, there seems no logic to why some jobs are inherently more risky.

 

Car insurance pricing is basically a black art. There are some major risk factors we all know about, like: the vehicle you drive, how many claims you've had, do you have points on your license, have you ever been banned, where do you live, etc. But the rest? Eh, who the hell knows.

 

You forgot the biggest factor.

What can we get away with charging?

Every year my quote goes up a lot, every year I pay the same or less than the year before, it pays to argue with these people.

 

Weird, it shoudl be there. But behold!

 

Sounds about right.

A couple years ago my Policy was £1500
My renewal quote was Four. Freaking. Thousand. Pounds.
I call to politely advise them they can inset it in the nearest orifice. No changes to the policy, no referrals to the cancellation team, three taps on the keyboard and "Ah okay, how about £2400 then?"
Competitor's quote - £1200

 

Certainly looks like the winning answer to 99.99999% of argu... I mean; discussions to me.
