I can only thank you guys wholeheartedly for pointing me in the direction of these f***ing fabricating gods, I wasn't aware of Project Binky until I saw your posts and, after watching 26 episodes in the last 24 hours, I am in awe of these guys.

A 1970 Mini was my first car, widened wheels, twin barrel Weber and four into one, it was so much fun. I was a mechanic back then and came across some great homebrew "projects", such as a Mini with a Mazda RX2 Rotary engine (complete with shortened Mk 1 Cortina rear end, scared many a V8 at the traffic lights) and a Fiat 500 with an air cooled Kawasaki Z1000 engine mounted sideways in the rear (that thing did wheelstands!) but to witness what is basically building a Mini from scratch around a turbo 2.4L Toyota engine is pure car porn.

The best thing is that it is not over yet...

Still, 26 epsodes in one day . Although, now you get to join in with the rest of us, waiting anything from one to three months for the next update. 26 Eps over six years is both awesome and painful.

I'm not a huge "car guy" really, but the level of engineering and fabrication work they've put into that car is astonishing. It's a work of art at this stage. I'll be kinda sad when they do actually finish it, but apparently they have a lot of other projects lined up, besides the Escargot.

 

Yes. They're not just "2 blokes in a shed" either. BOM is a full-time garage in Shrewsbury.

 

Just watched Escargot and it was a nostalgia trip for me. I worked on those Fords in the 80's and, whilst I haven't had to remove an engine, I have had the gearbox out more times than I care to remember to replace the clutch. I can concur, without any hint of overstatement, that (to quote from Escargot Ep, 2) "the gearbox weighs as much as a small moon, you need to be a Russian shotputter to change gear and there is a postcode between the gear ratios". Not only that, the heavy and long gear linkages made it feel like you were stirring mashed potato when changing gear.

The Dover engines were also very much "a machine for turning diesel into noise and smoke" - there were hills in Wellington (NZ) that you couldn't go up in these trucks unless you wanted to embarassingly get stuck and have to call the workshop to come with another truck to rescue you (honest, I only did it once whilst an apprentice). That was the prime reason we had to change so many clutches, if you stopped you could not go again if pointing uphill.

Everyone in the workshop was so glad when they were replaced with Hino's.

Edit: I was an apprentice at the city power board, maintaining a fleet of cars (petrol and CNG, NZ was a dual fuel pioneer in the 80's), trucks, plant equipment, tractors, crane platforms (Hiabs & Palfingers mainly), lamppost hole borers and cherry pickers (from small to mahoosive). This explains why I had to work on so many of those Ford POS's.

 

Never underestimate '2 blokes in a shed' though, that is [or was] the foundation of British engineering.

 

I saw the thumbnail artwork and immediately knew that was Ahoy, you've made my day.

 

I hope they have some of Jeff Wayne's musical scores in it.
