Might want to reconsider that. SATA m.2 drives are much slower than NVMe.

There aren't too many real world average user workloads where that statement is true.

If you have spinning rust, yes. But if you can find the big difference between SATA SSD and NVME SSD in normal usage please let me know. If you want to save space and cables or if the price difference is negligible, go for it.

As I have about 20 projects I planned, pulled the trigger on one which requires a tough case.

I found a significant difference in upgrading from a SATA to NVMe drive when working with large word files and referencing software.
In general, I found it greatly improved system responsiveness.

Congratulations! You are now one of the very elite circle of people I know who actually found a use case for NVME! ;)

Still, for most people using Chrome/Edge/Firefox/Opera, MS Office and games there won't be a night and day difference. As I said, if prices are close go for NVME. It's great as a technology, I just cannot see the mass-appeal many people in the media (and obviously in the marketing departments) want to convince me of.

It isn't necessary for a user that only plays games, runs chrome with 20 odd tabs and only writes word documents a few pages may not notice a difference and I would not suggest that it makes much difference in loading times or fps.

That said, I noticed an immediate and obvious difference with my workload. Working with work documents longer than 100 pages with Mendeley was unbearable until I upgraded to an M.2 drive. I was forced to create a citation in a blank document and copy-paste it to the original or copy over excepts to work on.
I can't imagine what it would have been like after combining all of the chapters into a single file. I think that the price difference between SATA and NVMe drives as narrow enough that it is worth paying a little extra for a significant increase in headroom, both read/write and IOPS.

Other option would be to not use word on such big documents, latex Cheesecake :)

    Landlord insurance.

At least now the damned thing may actually bring some money in rather than just devour time and money :thumb:

LaTeX is fantastic, but it doesn't take care of the really heavy workload - citation management. There's BibTeX and BibLaTeX for that, mind - but I've not used either, nor Mendeley, so I don't know how they compare.

Speaking of writin' and the like:

Should have bought one years ago. Found this one cheap second-hand, so once I get some time I'll be doing a bit of the ol' CPD.

@Gareth Halfacree you don't need any tips on writing style!

I particularly like the style you have of making typos in artciles so people can point them out and feel included. You're very giving like that. :)

We do agree on that. As I said, if price difference is small and/or you don't like cables and/or have limited space, NVME is a great option.
