    Socket compatibility isn't a big deal, but die compatibility is. Wind the way-back machine back to the launch of Threadripper, and you'll remember the initial TR4 waterblock release was pretty dire, due to AMD supplying OEMs with the physical specs of the socket and IHS but not of the die layout leading to waterblocks that did not actually over the die area (where the heat is emitted). As the Zen 2 Threadrippers feature a different die layout to the Zen 1 Threadrippers, coverage is again a concern.

    EK in particular had poor performance, using the same size fin area as their 115x and am4 blocks and just extended the cooling plate. Took them 2 further attempts to get it right.
