Yup. Unless the senate has about two thirds of its members drop dead tonight, trump will be fine.

Trump is dealing with an impeachment and an election year, and Netanyanu is seeking immunity from prosecution for corruption. So the timing is indeed rather... coincidental.

Happy new year, everybody. Third day in and it already promises to be a bumpy ride.

    Full distraction mode engaged.

Just waiting for the movie, Full Mental Distraction.

Already planning the sequel Full Mental Straightjacket.

I'm also waiting to see how long it is until BoJo drags us in.

Actually I suspect that the explanation for this sudden strike is just Trump reacting to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's tweet on his English-language Twitter account, posted day before yesterday:

Basically: country leaders are now goading each other into starting wars on Twitter. Welcome to the brave new world of 2020.

Don't Twitter have policies regarding inciting violence, threatening language and, err like war-stuff?

I suspect instead that it is a distraction (and a de-facto declaration of war by assassinating a foreign official is a hell of a distraction) for the most recent release packet of the memos and transcripts gathered during the Mueller inquiry, along with the separate release of an unredacted memo confirming Trump had personally and explicitly requested the hold of the release of funds to Ukraine.

That would be an epic dead cat to throw on the table if so, or should we say it's throwing dead people on the table.

Electoral year, people will be less inclined to switch government if there's an ongoing war.

I find this terrifying. Arbitrary symbolic threats towards the culture of a people are absolutely the domain of fascism/Nazism.

And (afaik) a war crime, seeing Trump in the Hague would be fun.

Except the US aren't signed up to the ICC and have threatened to arrest ICC members if they went after Americans.

Nope. AFAIK the US have never fully been on board with the ICC even though they helped create it.

Some Presidents have been more cooperative than others but in their eyes there is no higher law than US law.

They did threaten visa bans on ICC staff earlier this year though so I read this as the current Administration being less 'cooperative' than others.

The ICC just won't investigate the US for war crimes, International Law applies to everyone except the Americans it seems.

And i guess as a sitting president can't be tried in-front of the courts there's no chance of anyone holding him to account, what with congress who are meant to sit in judgment being so partisan.

In other words the chances of anyone doing anything if he went off the deep end and started destroying Iranian cultural sites and/or civilians the courts couldn't stop him and congress would still refuse to impeach him.

The checks and balances never conceived of a whole party that would put self over the republic. There is no eventuality for this. There is no failsafe any more. If the Republicans haven't just decided to ignore votes, we'll get him out with the vote.

If they do, or pack the box, or disenfranchise people, or whatever, then America was a fun experiment, everyone. I'm hoping the UN drops food for us.
