I was looking at the ryzen 3700x with a 2070 aswell. That gpu seems like a good price, usually 2070 i have seen are around £450-£550. Personally I would avoid MSI on Ryzen. That may be my bad experiences with lots of boards of theirs, though. You're losing PCIE 4, and possibly more USB ports. Other than the PCIE 4 though the rest is easy to spot, just have a look over the back plate and connectors. I always grab the manual for a board I am considering then have a good read over a cup of tea. MSI also made a complete stinker of a board recently so it seems they have become the new Gigabyte. IE they are cutting corners. Talking of whom. I can't praise my Gigabyte Aorus X399 enough. You may also find that B450 boards don't have enough juice to supply the 3900x and 3950x, too. I just checked for you and yeah, apparently it supports both, though don't expect to ever overclock them. However, all that said if this is a use it for 5 years PC and then replace it's absolutely fine. Oh yeah you may gain an extra NVME slot on the dearer boards too, but tbh using it for anything but booting it's worth it. SATA SSDs are great for storing games that do load faster, NVME makes no difference there.

Yeah I tried to work around that but it proved too much sadly. It's one mean ass chip though. Proper rocket ship. Maybe consider a X470 board. PCIE gen 4 is kinda daft on x570 because the lanes are the limitations. Like, I'm running 32 lanes just on pcie ssds in my home rig. The 2070 is the best buy entry mid level at the mo. It'll be finite though, but man that's great value. I'll be fitting my Asus Dual OC tomorrow. I paid £20 more for it, but only because the 2080 wb fits. I'll do some tests on my 16 core Haswell, so I'll go for GPU bound tests. It'll be going up against a KFA2 2070 Super on air in the same rig, then next week it'll do battle with a Titan XP, both under water. I'll add games into that too.
What do you think about the rgb stuff? I am considering getting some rgb ram with the white case rather than black. I'd definitely recommend X470 for Ryzen unless you absolutely positively *need* PCIe gen 4. If you're interested in overclocking I personally wouldn't go any lower than that.
Nothing wrong with the MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX, a solid board. Averages between £85-£100. I've used a few, 0 issues.
That's fair enough. I just said personally I wouldn't go below an X470. In my experience they've got better components and some more features. I'm sure there are plenty of excellent B450 boards out there - just I've never had any experience of any of them. Compared with X370, X470 seems much easier to use with regards overclocking
Sorry George that wasn't aimed at you, was more of a general comment regarding that specific B450 board. It's a minefield across all B450, X470, X570 boards regarding VRM quality / temps. Look at MSI's X570 VRM temps...think it was hardware unboxed? that did a video not long back, I think there was one or two MSI X570 boards that were OK.
Wow - I missed that video. That board was throttling at stock - PCB temps of 116ºC are ridiculous! It's definitely a minefield. I have to admit I went for the top of the line X470 (the Crosshair VII) and it's fantastic. Coming from 1st Gen Ryzen I never thought I could just chuck in 32GB of RAM and have it work at 3200MHz with timings of (off the top of my head) 14-14-14-20 and have a 2700X overclocked to 4.25GHz but it just works. /threadhijack
Avoid corsair kits, take a Ballistix instead, cheaper and far more potential for overclock, every Ballistix kit I've tried was able to be pushed easily to 3800 C14 1:1 with Zen2 and a decent board, like the Tomahawk B450 MAX, the CH7, CH8, X570 Taichi etc. p.s.: The Ballistix 2x16GB Dual rank (3200 or 3600) is also a great option for 32GB, same OC potential, 3800 1:1 C14 easy
