OK, I have now caught up with the entire series. That is an impressive piece of engineering...

He has to finish the bloody 4 rotor first! Yeah it runs, but it still needs to be finished

I can't stand the sound of those rotor engines.

I like them, I used to work on Mazda rotaries back in the 80's (RX-2, RX-3), my cousin had an RX-2, went like a scalded cat.

A guy I knew (engineer) put an RX-2 engine into a Mini, rear wheel drive and all, the 'effin thing used to lift the front wheels at local amateur drag meets.

Oh I know they're good, but the sound. It sounds like they want to blow up every second.

But that's how they were designed - to have the nuts thrashed off them all day...

From what I gather, standard part of repairing/servicing/rebuilding rotaries is to up the idle revs to keep the engine happier for longer.

I love the idea of rotary engines, but if you have to automatically budget an extra £3k or so for the inevitable engine rebuild then it kinda takes the shine off. I'd still love an RX-8, but maybe when I've paid off a few more bills  (at which point most surviving RX-8s will have likely rusted to death because of the UK climate!)

Just for laughs, here is a trike with an RX-7 engine in it...

(The guy in the article is a very old friend of mine, we were at high school together and did our mechanic apprenticeships at the same time. We have lost touch and I found out he has had some issues in his life. I haven't been able to get hold of him for about 5 years now, it makes me sad. The mate he has a bourbon bet with mentioned in the last sentence of the article is me.)

I couldn't go in that thing. How any one can even drive it is a mystery, that takes some savage skill. It's literally on the bleeding edge every second.

But the engineering and work that's gone into it are unrivalled. I absolutely love it.

Probably why the 'old boy' wants rid - yeah, I get the 'too many toys' line, but the "WTAF have I created...?" thinking may have finally dawned on him.
