Edit: Since I found this, the guy, out of the generosity, decided to give everything to the Church and the first responders. I have a feeling that he felt it would be safer for him that way loll
A couple more articles to share with friends/family that think this is being overblown. https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/health/coronavirus-how-epidemics-spread-and-end/
Useful simulations. Makes things very clear. Financial Times (paywall) has a chart of current state of affairs:
Apologies if it's already been posted but i came across this map that may be of interest to anyone living in the UK that wants to know how many reported cases are in their local authority.
Oh, and: "US President Donald Trump tried to lure German scientists working on a potential Corona vaccine to the US with big financial grants, to ensure exclusive access for his country. The WELT AM SONNTAG learned this from government circles." Clicky. Biological warfare by proxy?
Its about the only strategy. Trying to tweak the numbers to keep the hospital loading as sustainable as possible is the key and doing that is basically a best guess.
I'm annoyed at the stupidity of folks emptying the shops of certain stuff. On Friday there was no flour at all, bread flour, self raising, the lot. I'm not sure the types doing this will actually manage to bake much. Probably it will all get junked back into the charity bins in a few weeks. But while mercifully my wife and children have no worrying health complications, we have to worry that this might finish us off financially as we have a small chain of ice cream parlour cafes and we have just expanded. Without the trade from Easter and the next month, we will probably end up in a pretty deep hole financially. I guess the bank will probably help a bit at the limit, but it's pretty scary. Would like to have a nice office job in a big company right now.......... EDIT: 6yo son now has cough and temperature.....
Exactly. Though if I was still an IT contractor at the moment, I'd expect to be laid off instead of working remotely.
Depends who you're contracting for i suppose, some are still paying their contractors, just asking them not to come in.
Depends how critical the job is. Some places totally banned contractors from working remotely, others didn't mind. But, binning contractors or cutting their rates was alwsys a fast and easy way of cutting costs.
Got a friend's wedding this Friday, now having doubts over whether I should go or not because of this. Haven't heard them changing any of the plans but pinged a message to see if they have, don't mind stopping a bunch of stuff (haven't been to the gym for the last week and a bit) but shame to miss a once in a lifetime event because of it
That was *after* he made an alleged five-digit profit - but he's also under investigation by the state AG for profiteering, which comes with a $1,000 fine per offence. In his case, he told the NY Times that he sold 300 bottles of sanitiser in his initial batch at grossly inflated markup, which would mean a $300,000 fine. He's also had his Amazon account closed, his eBay account closed, he's been kicked out of his storage unit, and he's received a tonne of abuse. We can only hope it makes the spiv think twice next time - and serves as an example to others.
While I concur with the hope it serves as an example, I also find myself thinking there's not a chance in hell that it'll stop anyone doing this turd-nugget crap even within the same coronavirus situation. Interestingly, here in Germany, a lot of stuff is sold out (Toilet roll mostly, because.. Are people really shitting that often that they need to buy that much of it?) but there doesn't seem to be a decrease in "normal" behaviour. Given how close we are to Italy, it strikes me as curious that there aren't more panic-based self isolators.
