Build Advice £5k PC for a friend

So a friend wants a new PC, he does streaming ect, what would you go for? Minimal effort.

 

IIRC mine cost right around £4k by the time I was done with the storage and sound card. Maybe more ram? IDK.

 

£5k seems like more money than sense territory, or at least spending money for the sake of it territory.

 

Yeah I have to agree. I actually struggled spending 4. 3 grand should easily cover a top spec rig.

 

Does that money include screen and peripherals? Case and fans? Power supply?

What's the use case? Just gaming and streaming?

 

Money isn't really a problem, he just wants the best he can that'll last him a fair while.

 

Just the system, nothing else for now.

 

It's gotta be a 2080Ti. Then something AMD. Depends on what he wants for lanes etc, but after spending two weeks looking at the new Threadripper I realised it would be aggro. Are you going to build it for him?

 

Unsure if I'll be building it, but he won't want anything like watercooling thats for sure. Threadripper seems a bit more content creator than streamer.

 

Yeah, then I would deffo go 3950x. No point in two GPUs any more, so you should easily get well under that figure with a 3950x and 2080Ti. I would build it for him to save money. Plus you'll know 100% it's built properly.

Yup. I wouldn't pay that for Windows though. No point any more.

One thing.. Asus are terrible for drivers as their products age. I would deffo get a different network card. I've got three of their uber high end WIFI cards that don't work any more because they couldn't be assed with their drivers.

 

Also. The board choice is obviously very solid, but apparently this is the best X570 board.

Buildzoid did a roundup recently. That said if you are building it and prefer Asus's bios then by all means go with that as of course it's also a top end board.

 

That is easy to get up to 5k with upping the RAM to 32/64GB, SSD from 480GB to 2TB, and 2TB HDD to 8TB as well as the Ti GPU.

 

Oh to add. The Gigabyte has a 2.5gbit NIC on it too. I think that is where it won out overall, on phases and features.

 

I would recommend a second HDD, either a spinner or second SSD for backup and media. It's much easier formating with a second drive.

 

Thats all going in a NAS, hence the 10G networking.

Awesome thats finally becoming a standard but you can;t get the switches that easily! 10G is currently easier.

 

Yeah Linus was saying that. How 5gbit cards are much better value but the switches are more expensive lol. I was going to build a new NAS but decided against it. Well, at least until the PC is completely done.

 

First you probably want to know what he uses software wise and its resource requirements but really If you have 5k, and are comfortable spending it on PC, don't mess about spend it on PC and build around a threadripper, plenty of scope for adding more drives/cards as future needs required, no real limitations to the system, lots of lanes for M2 drives, gpus/capture cards and 10Gb lan etc, a 3960x and and Asrock Creator (because of slot configs and 10G, not the greatest onboard Power but functional) should see you right, 2k there once RAM considered, 1k for gpu, 1k for rest of stuff in case (storage/software) and ~1k monitor setup, many ways to go there one big screen, many smaller ones, depends on how you like to work.
