CPU What's the go-to value CPU for 1080p 60FPS these days? (w/ DDR3 RAM)

I wouldn't go that far, x470 saw a drop after x570 released. And at this budget, even a £10 saving is a lot!

Aye and if you want the Tomahawk Max VRMs on an mATX setup then it's the Mortar Max.

 

I've watched this vid (actually the updated one) and it's pretty definitive that I should get the B450M Mortar Max.

Tomahawk is £20 or so more, but he's high on the Mortar even over the Tomahawk and unless anyone chimes in, I don't know what real benefit it has. (Does size really matter? )

So 3300x (£120) + B450M Mortar Max (£100), just RAM left right? Anything to worry about or compatibility issues? I just need 3200+MHz, if not 3000, right?

 

The Mortar looses 2 SATA ports but gains a M.2, and has more USB on the rear IO, so thats about it really.

Looks goos, Yeh, 3200MHz+, as you loose performance under that.

 

The only compatibility issues I can think of is actual chip support, what with it being a new chip but the Motar MAX has bios flash back meaning you can update BIOS without CPU, so a small USB stick might be inorder

with respect to RAM compatibility seems to be good on the 3xxxx chips seem to like micron E die as found in Ballistix Sport LT if you want to do overclocking, 16GB of that is ~60ishquid but any RAM will do the job if you are not a tinkerer.

 

I've got the Ballistix Sport LT, not tried clocking to 3600 yet but works no problems at 3200.

 

Not really sure what to look for other than price and speed (and timings, but don't know what good numbers are other than comaring with adidan's example), so just went on a store and sorted by price for an example, like:

Nope, given it's the cheapest I have seen. More than good enough.

3600 (£164 from Amazon), MSI B450M MORTAR MAX (£96 from Scan), 2 x 8GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance (£65 from Scan) = £325

Selling my CPUs, RAM and dodgy boards should make back half that.

EDIT: I said I was getting a 3300x for £120, but I remembered the 3600 was on sale on Amazon, so I derped and will have to cancel that 3300x from Scan!

Yeah good call on upping the spec a bit man. I would feel a lot safer with the 3600 too. Definitely the best value in the CPU world right now IMO.

One thing you can try is tightening the timings on the RAM. Might gain you a few %

I've been more than happy with this combo coming from an i7 3770, especially the value. I've also been pleasantly surprised as to how regularly MSI have provided updates.

Ryzen 3600 will keep you happy, at least after the crying because "overspent" is done.

 

This just inspired me to buy the same parts (although I went for flashier RGB RAM )! I was trying to play C&C and kept getting stutters, I think this system is borked, so I'm going to do the same as you! Only difference is I need to wait for a waterblock mount I'm thinking I may just run it as a janky build for a few days and just leave the waterblock hanging

 

I thought the Asrock B450M Steel Legend would be the one for me, but it looks like that MSI B450M Mortar Max is the business.
Shame my best DDR4 is 'only' 3000... Will have to keep on saving, but with a new target board.

Does 200MHz really make that big a difference in RAM, never mind CPU?

A comparison video I watched showed a bump of about 5 FPS generally with RAM, though that's for high FPS, but I don't know the ins and outs.

The 3600 and 3300x are pretty much equal, but it saves having to try and sell your 3300x without getting screwed, if the day comes that 4c8t holds you back a little.

 

Good to know, I thought that Ryzen liked as fast as you could get up to 3200.
