That letter reminds of this little gem from the gender swapped intellectual equal of Mark Francois...

(approx one month after she voted against it herself)

Those that paved the way for the Government to instigate austerity politics?

The only way i'd clap is if they kill me, cut off my hands and slap them together.

And yet somehow it doesn't even make the play offs for the top 10 dumbest things Boris said...

Didn't realise people in the UK had the whole 'communism is bad' mentality, thought that was more of an American thing.

I find it hard to believe seeing as it was the destitution of the working class in England that helped contribute to the origins of Communism in the first place IIRC (IIRC re my remembering rather than me being around in the 1800's).

Quick look, aye it was Manchester where work started on the manifesto.

Oh ****, the OneWeb thing. It's moronic on so many, many different levels.

    On the technical aspect:
    - The current OneWeb satellites are worthless for GNSS. They provide a worthwhile positioning signal like a fishing net provides a useful solution for transporting molten steel.
    - You would need to remove the entire payload (which is integrated into the bus, rather than as hosted module like the Boeing 702, which means redesigning the entire satellite) and replace it with a new GNSS timing payload, or 'glom' an external timing payload on and thus no longer be able to launch the satellites from their existing vehicle adapter or inside the existing fairings of the vehicles that have launched them, as the satellites would now be physically oversized. And any external payloads would need to not block the PV panels, radiators, or RF antennae.
    - The OneWeb bus is designed entirely around a (high-ish) LEO orbit telecomms constellation. This is unsuitable for GNSS for multiple reasons. First, it means that instead of building a small number of ultra-high-precision clocks (33 for GPS, 30 for Galileo, 35 for BeiDou, 26 for GLONASS) you now need to build more than 600. This is due to the lower coverage for each satellite (smaller local horizon). On top of that, ground receivers now need to be much more complicated than existing multi-system GNSS receivers: they need to handle satellites that enter, cross, and exist the coverage zone in times measured in seconds rather than minutes. The lower orbits also mean more interference from gravitational variance (accounted for in other GNSS systems too, but harsher when your satellites are ~22,000km closer to the planet).
    - By the time you've rebuild the OneWeb bus to operate at a higher altitude, removed the telecomms payload (and lost all the 'revenue' it would be generating) or bloated the satellite by building it to host a double payload, rebuild the deployment adapter (and lost a lot of satellites/launch capacity, making cost/satellite/launch even higher), you may as well just have built dedicated satellites in the first place!

    On the 'sovereignty' aspect:
    - The government in investing as part of a private consortium, and does not have majority control (or even close). In terms of control over operations, it has precisely dick.
    - It's far worse than the offer to stay involved with Galileo's military channel, as the consortium would happily sell you down the river (and sell your data, and sell equivalent military access) if they thought they could make a quick buck.

On the 'but we want UK companies to be able to bid for Galileo contracts!' aspect:
    - The gov are bidding for the controlling OneWeb consortium, not the consortium that actually makes the satellites (which the controlling sconsortium them 'purchases' them from)
    - The satellite production line is in the US
    - The majority ownership of the construction consortium is European, mostly Airbus.

It's just a monumentally stupid idea in every aspect.

Of course it is monumentally stupid. It's Dominic Cummings' idea: the psychopathic pseudo-intellect who wishes to think he is some sort of supernaturally insightful genius.

Isn't that also Boris [and Rees-Mogg]. They quote long words they don't understand [technobabble and scientific sounding waffle in Cumming's case, Latin in Boris/Mogg's] because they think they sound clever [or in their heads it's what mart, educated people do], when in reality they're just vomiting forth word salad that makes them sound like they ****ed a thesaurus.

Mogg also thickly layers on that upper class chinless wonder twit accent with the expectation that people will instinctively bow down to it and him.

Can we do a North/South Ireland thing in the UK? Have half the UK still in the EU, and half outside? The South can be the part that stays, since it's closer to France (and it's more civilised).

Kinda half joking, half serious with this one...

    Nah, it wouldn't work.

For starters how would you govern the two new parts of England? What would the consequences be if every part of the UK had a Government? Basically you'd end up with a "proper" federation of nations (or mini EU if you are cynically inclined).

Then once that is done you'd have to convince the EU to give the Federated States of the UK and NI an exception similar to what Lichtenstein, Channel Islands etc have, except due to the size of the Federated States of the UK and NI the EU would never grant that.
