Live DJing on two Atari STs. This pushes many of my happy buttons.

Unfortunatly we wont know for several days, possibly weeks as folk succumb to injuries, from what folks are saying and the video's it looks like a fireworks fire detonated 2700+ tons of ammonium nitrate that had been improperly stored in the port for several years
some of the video footage from the aftermath and the hospitals are pretty grim...

Something seems off about that - ammonium nitrate typically needs to be mixed with something like diesel before it's burn rate becomes explosive. I mean, it'll burn like a fother mucker but it isn't usually detonation sensitive in an unmixed state. Mind, if it's been stored improperly and had deteriorated over time, commercial grade fireworks could make for a handy detonator.

It kinda seems like a perfect storm though, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this was intentional.

Truly shocking and horrifying footage. Seemingly, the ammonium nitrate had been left in there for some years and not attended to. That shockwave...
Not that anywhere needs a disaster like that, but Beiruit wasn't in great shape as it was.
Lebanon already on its knees economically with an ineffective and corrupt government. :(

Aren't they also largely reliant on food imports [which came via that very port]?

If Ammonium Nitrate becomes wet and hot it degrades into Nitrous Oxide gas and Water whilst also generating more heat, which accelerates the reaction further. It can reach it's flash point and explode by itself, I've had that drilled into me repeatedly when dicking about near the fertiliser store as a child.

Not that is necessarily what happened in Beirut.

Seeingly so, the had capacity for 11 ships, the next port is Tripoli with capacity for one...

Yeah, I know if it gets damp/moist it's det-sensitivity increases - being stored improperly in a port area, in a hot country clearly ticked that box - and the close-up of the fireworks factory fire.. well, I'm just surprised they didn't have a LPG plant on the other side of it.

When that goes up that's gonna ruin a lot of peoples' days. It's too dangerous to ignore, yet also too dangerous to do anything with/about it.
