Nvidia has the whole thing planned out.
    3070 - 8GB
    3080 - 10GB
    3090 - 24GB

Need to fill in price segments / compete with AMD? Double the RAM, increase some clocks, bob's your Super Ti uncle.
    3070 Uncle Bob Edition - 16GB
    3080 Uncle Bob Edition - 20GB

By some miracle Big Navi is good? Create an actual Titan above the 3090 or call it 3090 Uncle Bob Edition or whatever.

There are also rumours that Asus and co will not wait around for Nvidia to do official cards with double memory but do it themselves (some time after launch, pure guess on my part would suggest in time for Christmas).

Couldn't nvidia restrict that kind of behaviour through its licensing agreements?

Yes, they could prevent it just like they banned them from making their own coolers for Titan cards.

Always a way around it. EVGA made the Titan ACX cooler and just bundled it with the card lol.

BTW. The 3gb 580 was not strictly official. Neither was the 4gb 770.

And, and I could be wrong here (my memory isn't what it once was) I could swear that MSI did an unofficial 6gb 780Ti.

So EVGA did at least. And yeah, they are like rocking horse droppings.

hah ! (high fives his brain)

8K-ready? Looks like I need to upgrade... NOT. I'm still comfortably running at 4K. Unless I'm way behind the 8-ball here, I don't think investing in an 8K TV or monitor will be in my near future. While I do think it is awesome that the technology keeps advancing... the prices are getting absolutely ridiculous. I'll keep running my 1070s for now.

I do plan on doing a partial rebuild sometime this year. The MOBO, Processor, and Velociraptor HDDs in my sig were set up in December 2009 (I can't believe they are still going). Since then I've gone thru several video card upgrades, one PSU change, RAM upgrade, added the SDD, and shifted from monitors to a 4K TV.

    Yeah 8K is way of my must haves list - but 4K @ 240fps would be nice. Assuming 4x 4K is 8K @ 60fps ... I don’t know.

4K screens currently top out at 144hz, so no way to display a 145th frame much less 240 of them.

Also if we assume for the sake of argument that games run 50% faster on a RTX 3090 than a 2080TI that will in many cases not even be enough to get you to 100 fps without severely lowering quality settings.

Won’t 4K screens reach to 240hz in the future?

Also, I’m running Prey at 3440x1440 @ a minimum of 102fps (a brief run round to check) on a Titan X Pascal ....

    I don’t think I’ll be far off with a 3090?

By the time they do the 3090 will have made room for a 4090 or even 5090.

3440x1440 is only 4.95 million pixels while 4K is 8.29, so quite a big jump.

Don't get me wrong some older games can get decent framerates at 4K, but look at stuff like RDR2, Borderlands 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Assasin's Grind Odyssey and lowering quality settings is a doubled edged sword as a game may well end up looking better at 1440p Ultra than 4K medium.

dunno, I was kind of hoping they would hit its actual implied line resolution, which is what tv systems have been using since electronic TV

    480 how many lines 480
    720 how many lines 720
    1080 how many lines 1080
4k how many lines 2160 (WTF)

4k should be 2k and 8k should be 4k THEN once we have hardware that can actually HIT those resolutions at a minimum 60 fps then we can worry about higher

To stop derailing some other thread that is not to be derailed:

Financially it was close to a disaster, though. Issue with AMD is that they have no foothold in the market, which would be easier if they had a halo product. Because people like insanely expensive shiny and/or fast stuff. And YouTubers like getting stuffed with toys by manufacturers to hype said stuff. And Nvidia is just too damn good at it for AMD to get in there. Not being helped by the fact they have no halo product. Price/performance is nice, but you don't win useless but shiny awards with it.

Big Navi probably won't be much cheaper than their Nvidia counterparts, because Lisa will try to make the shareholders happy with higher margins than before. So I expect the top Big Navi product to be a card landing somewhere between the 3070 and 3080 and cost 550-600 USD before tax. Which, once more, would make it very good value for money and not change the market structure, I fear.
