    And they must have known it would get messy, I've warned about such issues regarding NI years ago in this very thread and well... if I could see it coming long ago then surely they must have too.

    Now just wait until Spain starts talking about the implications regarding Gibraltar from the fallout re NI.

    Everybody with half a brain knew it would be tough, with a strong tendency towards messy. Not trying to make you look less smart than you are, but every single person who thought this would be a breeze should get their head checked.

    Who says they did? They just ignored it and thought "bwahahahaha, we won't be in office by the time **** hits the fan anyway! Let the idiots after us deal with the fallout!".

    Is it worse to be too incompetent for your job or to be wilfully destructive? Both are bad, but which is harder to excuse?

    Malice is far harder to excuse.

    That being said, when it comes to stupidity there is a bit more to it than just *stupid politician does a stupid* because to some extent the system does set them up to fail.
    The whole system of "elect one pseudo dictator who gets to appoint whoever he wants regardless of qualifications" shares a lot of the blame when it comes to stupid politicians.

    I'd reckon a lot of problems we have with incompetence in politics would go away if we could vote for different people for different things and have actual requirements for candidates.

    Say for example rather than the replacement for Hancock being being chosen by whoever happens to be the next PM we could have an election for that and for someone to be a candidate they need to have studied medicine and have 10+ years experience as a doctor.

    The idea is that the Minister for Whatever doesn't need direct experience in Whatever, but is experienced in Ministering - then they have a staff of actual subject-matter experts who have experience in Whatever. The Minister does their Ministering, comes back to the staff and says "I need recommendations on X," the staff go away and subject-matter-expert the problem, come back with solution Y, the Minster takes solution Y and presents it to the Prime Minister.

    That's the idea.

    In reality, of course, the Minister for Whatever uses their position to give jobs to old mates, extract funds, do whatever the lobbyist with the biggest chequebook recommends, and eventually retire on a nice healthy pension and a £300k-a-year "consultancy" position at said lobbyist's firm.

    "Have some relevant qualifications please" would be much more enforceable than "pinky promise to not hire yet another corrupt crony of Cummings" though.
