Bloody hell, you can't even get the 'current' gen yet (practically speaking).

Probably in the same release later pile as Zen3 TR, Epyc, APUs, Pro, non X, XT.

I think the reason for the 5700x not being released on the 5th is due to the 5700xt GPU, which will be discontinued soon.
Guess they want to clear up the products naming to save confusion.

    Imagine this sig: 5700x, x570, 5700xt...

I also read that the reason they skipped 4xxx naming, is not just to save confusion over laptop zen2 4xxx series, but because AMD has seen market growth in China, and Four is close to how they pronounce the word death, so superstition and all, AMD decided to call it 5xxx series.

Apparently it’s to do with pcie4.0 compatibility.

ASUS did not want to take the risk, can’t say I blame them

Well, looks like the 3600 is perfectly happy with a 3080 at 1440p so it looks like I may hang off on the cpu until AM5.

x470 boards from Asus will get a Bios update, Just not before January 31st 2021 at the earliest was confirmed today,

#Asus is not dropping #AMD Ryzen 5000 support for X470 mainboards!!

We reached out and got the confirmation. As AMD stated they can only roll out the new bios versions in the beginning of next year!!

    Thanx @asusde for the confirmation.

Yeah, sounds more like "let's float this and see how it's received", shortly followed by "argh, volte face, volte face...."

Immediately followed by press release: "no, no, no, of course we weren't going to drop support". :worried:

    Considering I bought my 3600 ~4 months ago for £150 + a £35 game. I sold the game for £30......... It's certainly not a mid-range chip despite the Ryzen 5 name suggests!

I'll wait it out for the next best thing and hope to get my hands on a 5900x for ~£250 second hand.

Current 3900x are still going for £350, the 3900xt is going for as low as £400. So it maybe at least a couple of years before you could grab a 5900x for less than half price the RRP.

Saying that, the 3950x can be had for £450.
I doubt prices will drop much further when the 5xxx series launches, considering the 5xxx has had a price increase.

5950x does look very appealing, but as I'm not encoding 3D ray traced media in AE at the mo, I doubt I will use all those threads.
More of a want, than a need.

Wow - all of this just reminds me how out of touch I am these days! The 5950x looks to be better value (price-wise) than the 5960X and 6950X (the last monster CPUs I had).

I'm sat here running 16 simultaneous ImageMagick operations across 140 images. I could definitely make use of more threads - though given the size of the images and the fact I'm at 70% RAM usage already it'd have to come alongside an upgrade to 64GB of RAM too!

Still on my 2700K. Doing fine at the moment for what I need, but I have an impression the board is beginning to sulk, so might be my time to jump as well. Probably to 3-series though, if not 2600, dependent on price difference between the two secondhand and whether the board I pick up can handle a 3-series later on.

I do wish they'd homogenize these bl00dy names though...
    ...because of exactly this!
Like this, in fact! Even though they're probably unrelated, architecture-wise (CBA to check).

I didn't get this, but assume it's not a police reference given current climate... :p:
